The Boiler and its Revelation to the Home
Combi boilers are a condensed version of a combination between a hot water heater and a central heating system. They are very small and they work well in every type of household both big and small. With the combi boiler you never run out of hot water because you have an unlimited supply of water. As long as water is coming through your main and the burners are fired up in the unit then you have hot water.
Small dwellings that are limited on space will love the combi boilers because there is no need for a storage tank. You do not have to have room in your attic for a holding tank and you do not have to build a water closet beneath the holding tank to house the rest of the unit. This is one simplified unit that is small enough to be mounted in the kitchen area without causing trouble.
The water that comes from your main line passes through the unit and when you tell the unit that you require heated water that is when it fires up, otherwise the unit is not sitting there just maintaining a fire so it can keep water warm for you. That was how the older tank systems worked. The water in the tank was heated to a certain temperature and the unit maintained that temperature. When you needed to use some of the heated water it was taken from the tank and replaced with cold water that was then heated. These units burned a lot more fuel maintaining the heat in these tanks than the new hot water on demand units do.
The older water heaters that had tanks could run out of hot water and it would take them close to half an hour to heat some water to the correct temperature. So family members could not bathe back to back or they would not all have enough hot water for their shower. Some people would bathe in the morning and other members would bathe at night. It was also really bad if someone decided to wash the dishes or to wash the clothes while someone else was trying to take a hot shower. This meant there would not be enough hot water for both applications. This was always frustrating.
The combi boiler provides all the heated water you can use and removes all of the waste of using energy to heat water when it is not being called for. So when you are at work or otherwise away from home your unit is not burning fuel to keep water heated. When you return home and turn the faucet to get hot water then the unit fires up. A lot less fuel is consumed this way.
You should make a note that while these units are high efficiency the only way for them to remain that way is if you maintain them properly each year. If you do the proper care and maintenance of these devices then they can last you more than twenty years.
