When does a printed leaflet become a printed flyer?
Most people use the terms printed flyers and printed leaflets entirely interchangeably, so is there actually a difference between the two?
On the surface the answer is none, but dig a little deeper and there is a subtle difference in connotation between the terms leaflet and flyer.
Spot the difference:
A printed flyer is generally thought to be low-end. That might mean that it is smaller in size, perhaps A5 (half of an A4 sheet) or less. A flyer also conveys the sense that perhaps this promotional material is printed on cheaper stock and to a lower print specification.
This is in no means a scientific analysis of what it means to produce a flyer, but somehow the term flyer is synonymous with “instant” and “throw away”. It’s a message that you want to place in front of someone as they walk out of the exit of a tube station.
And now for something smart:
A leaflet, on the other hand, might contain information which is a little more detailed. Leaflets are just used to market a thought to the prospective consumer, but to educate them a little too.
Again, there is nothing particularly defined about this, but a leaflet somehow feels slightly more serious. You might be handed a leaflet by your GP to explain the medication that you are to take. Leaflets are, perhaps, printed on slightly higher quality stock and somehow sound just a tad more serious than a flyer.
As I’ve explained, none of this is set in stone, and in fact your printers might well use the two terms interchangeably too. I tend to prefer the term leaflet, because it sounds a little less fly-by-night and slightly more professional. But it’s a judgement call and as long as you are aware that there is not great difference then it will clear up any confusion when you come to order your printed flyers, sorry I mean printed leaflets. or should that be flyers after all?
You get my point!
