The Advantages of Glass Food Containers
When it comes to storing food, glass containers have many advantages over plastic containers. Here are some of the reasons why you should you change from plastic containers to glass food containers:
1. Glass containers are non toxic and non reactive. They don’t react with food that is stored in them when warmed up in the microwave. By comparison, plastic containers leach diethylhexyl adipate into food when heated, especially into foods with fat content (so any dishes with meat in them). They also leach Biphesnol A (BPA), a substance that behaves like oestrogen, into any liquid food regardless of whether it has been heated. BPA has been linked to breast cancer and ovarian illness. Therefore glass storage containers are simply better for your health. If you have small children, then switching to glass becomes imperative.
2. Glass food storage containers now come with fitted lids, which means that you can store them in the freezer and then remove the lid and microwave the contents when you are ready to serve dinner. So if you bulk cook for freezing, there is no need to use plastic containers any more.
3. Tempered glass food containers do not distort, discolor or scratch. By contrast plastic containers develop scratches, and when heated distort and absorb stains from the food (because the food has reacted with the plastic). If the food stored in the container is acidic (for example pickles), the acid will eat into plastic containers, but glass containers will be undamaged. Unless you have butter fingers and drop your glass containers, they should stay in the condition you got them for years. (In any case the tempered glass used to make glass containers is tougher than traditional glass and much harder to break).
4. Glass storage containers do not absorb smells from the food stored within them. Because glass is inert and non-reactive, odours from the food do not penetrate or attach to the glass. Whereas plastic containers usually start to smell, especially if you have stored foods that are highly spiced in them.
5. Glass containers look high quality. Many top homeware designers like to work with glass, and as a result most glass containers are beautiful, stylish, and can be left on display – for example, candy glass jars, or jars with attractive spices in them. Plastic containers by contrast look cheap, and low quality.
6. Glass containers are not expensive. The cost is only fractionally more than plastic containers.
7. Glass containers are eco friendly. Glass is made from a natural mineral, silica, which is found in sand. Plastic by contrast is an artificial by-product of the petroleum industry and is not bio-degradable and can take up to a millenium to break down in a landfil site.
So choose to make the switch from plastic to glass storage containers today.
