Fisherman’s Wharf – Some of the Cheapest Attractions in San Francisco

Think San Francisco and one of the first things that comes to mind is Fisherman’s Wharf. There is so much to do and to see at Fisherman’s Wharf that visitors to San Francisco often schedule more than one day just for wharf activities alone. And, although some attractions carry a fee, there are so many free things to enjoy that Fisherman’s Wharf is one of the cheapest attractions in the San Francisco Bay Area. Before you make the trip, make sure you have your proof of auto insurance with you so you’ll be in compliance with the law.

Of course, if you are looking for fresh seafood, the Wharf is the place to be. Be sure to arrive just as dawn is breaking so that you can get the earliest pick and the best prices on the seafood as it is unloaded from the vendors to the Wharf. There is simply nothing like fresh seafood right off of the boat, and San Francisco’s Fisherman’s Wharf provides some of the best anywhere.

From the Wharf you can also make a trip to San Francisco’s famous Alcatraz Island. History buffs and bird lovers alike will enjoy journeying to this historic island that was home to the first U.S. built fort and lighthouse on the west coast and to the Brown Pelican first seen by Spanish Explorers who named the island after the birds calling it Alcatraces. And, of course, no trip to the island would be complete without a close-up look at the federal penitentiary that shares the name of the island.

If there isn’t time for a trip to Alcatraz, Hyde Street Pier National Park offers a fleet of historic vessels, a free visitor center, and a free maritime museum. Access to the pier is also free, and it provides an excellent view of the entire San Francisco Bay, including the Golden Gate Bridge.

Those traveling to Fisherman’s Wharf by auto can find ample parking in the area at any of the multiple parking garages. If using a GPS device, entering 100 Jefferson Street will put you right in the center of the Fisherman’s Wharf District where you can then park your auto. It is cheapest to park your auto for the day and to navigate the crowded area via cable cars, ferries, and public transit. And it’s a good idea to have sufficient auto insurance to cover any damages that could occur to your car while parked. Touring the Wharf via Segway is especially fun and one of the cheapest ways to see the entire area. There are several Segway rental opportunities available in the Wharf area.

While traveling within San Francisco, and elsewhere in the State of California, please remember that state law requires that proof of auto insurance be carried at all times.
