5 Signs of Ancient Web Design
Or do you scratch your head, look at your competitor’s site, then look at your site again and mutter to yourself, ”serves me right for hiring this so-so web design firm, I certainly got what I paid for – a very dated, ancient looking website right out of the 90s!”
If you don’t know what a dated website looks like, here are 5 signs you need to look out for. Should your site have any of these elements, then perhaps you’d like to consult with a new web design firm to help you update the look of your site. After all, you don’t want your customers to think they got transported back to the 90s!
1. Ugly Patterned background – If your website has this ridiculous background image (patterns usually), which definitely slows down the site speed (be alarmed that Google also looks at site speed as a factor in the rankings), then perhaps it’s time to take down your geocities inspired site and update to a new one. Most new sites don’t use background images because they know it slows down loading time of their sites. If you will want to use one, make sure it’s related to your site, it’s optimized and its file size reduced so your site visitors won’t have to wait till the next century for the image to finally load.
2. Rotating Flaming Logo – oh please burst into flames already! Anybody who’s ever been doing web design knows how old this style is. A rotating flaming logo at the top of the page, and help you god, using comic sans or some funky looking font from 1998. Helvetica sends its hello (and would like to remind you that it’s one of the favorite fonts of designers both offline and online).
3. A copy right notice that says a year that’s out of date. How long has it been since your site has been updated? Your customers will certainly be turned off or at the least, confused you haven’t updated your site in years. For that matter, anything that indicates an old date! From copyright date, to last updates on your blogs (people prefer to read something updated, rather than outdated). Also, Google likes fresh & new content, so don’t be surprised your site isn’t found on the search engine pages.
4. Frames – do you know anyone who actually uses frames nowadays? Nobody uses frames anymore. Except if your site hasn’t been updated since 1999. First, SEO-wise it’s not the best move in their book, and second, it just doesn’t look good anymore. Nor will it look good when your site is viewed on mobile. And I’m sure you’re aware, a lot of people nowadays surf the internet on their mobile phones. You don’t want to lose that crowd.
5. A site that only looks good on Internet Explorer. There’s Opera Mini, Chrome, Rockmelt, Firefox and other small browsers out on the World Wide Web and they’re catching up on the user base of Internet Explorer. Update your site and make sure it looks good on all browsers.
So is your website guilty of the above crimes? Listen up – there’s still hope. Update your site and get inspiration from other websites for any new web design trends. Hire a web design firm that will have your best interests at heart. Remember, your site can be old (domain name has been in existence for decades or more), but the user interface can be new, updated, and refreshing to your site visitors. Sit down and deliberate the merits of your website design and usher in the new web designs of the 21st century!
