Important Steps of Family Therapy
Meeting of all family members with a therapist is called family therapy. It is not similar to medical therapy instead it is used to find out the family issues and problems. You can also use this therapy to solve their family disputes. When a therapist meets with all family members then he discusses freely with family members and he also allows the family members to express their views. Therefore on the basis of their arguments he tries to find out the source of tension in family. Some time therapist uses individual therapy technique when a single person needs special treatment. If a child has behavioral problem in family then individual counseling is beneficial. A family therapist should use the different techniques to interact with family members and he should adopt friendly behavior. In most cases the family problems arise due to individual issues. Therefore therapist should help affected individual so that he can deal with circumstances of his life. Some important steps of family counseling include
- 1. Diagnosis
Identification or diagnosis is the most important factor to solve the family issues or problems in a better way. A therapist can use the different techniques to identify the issues that affect health of whole family system. Therefore therapist should identify which issue is causing more tension or problem. Strategic techniques are designed to solve this problem. Initially therapist should get information about family history, mode of communication and several other issues.
- 2. Gathering of useful information
The second step of family therapy (in Denmark that’s called effektive parterapi) is to gather essential information about a particular family. Important information includes family background, history and relationship between the family members. History information is very necessary to point out the important issues of a family. Most of the family therapist uses genogram to collect the history information of family. Both family members and therapist can work together to create this history diagram and during this process therapist can observe the relationship between family members. A therapist can collect very useful information with the help of this technique.
- 3. Family tracking system
It is also a very important technique used to observe how issues develop in a family system. Similarly family sculpting is also an important technique to find out the interaction between family members. In this technique the members are asked to rearrange their family groups or select partners. Tracking technique is used to observe the situations and current issues in a family but family sculpting technique is used to find out interaction between family members. These techniques are used by most of the family therapists to solve the family problems in a better way. Sculpting is a very important technique of family therapy, and also of marriage counseling (which we Danes call find familierådgivning) but it is used only in specific conditions.
- 4. Communication techniques
In most cases the negative communication and interaction between family members could lead to division and problems. Therefore a therapist should observe the way of communication between the family members to find out the style of communication. During the process of family therapy a therapist should advice the family members to adopt positive communication techniques.
