What grains can you find in Healthy Bread?
Grains really are an essential part of a healthy diet. These can be found in some healthy bread. Most types of grains can be great sources of complex carbohydrates, not to mention key vitamins and minerals. And it just so happens that grains are also naturally low in fat. Fantastic! Better still, on numerous occasions they’ve been associated with a lower risk of heart disease and diabetes.
We think that the healthiest grains are probably whole grains. And what’s good is that you probably eat lots of grains already. But if you’re like most, you’re not getting enough whole grains in your diet. Let’s consider how to make whole grains a part of your healthy diet by look at some types of grains.
Whole grains. These grains are unrefined and haven’t had their bran and germ removed by milling. Whole grains are good for fibre and other important nutrients. Whole grains are either single foods, such as brown rice and popcorn, or ingredients in products, such as whole wheat in bread.
Refined grains. Refined grains are actually milled, a process that takes out both the bran and germ to give them a smoother texture and extend their expiry date. But the refining process removes many nutrients, including fibre. If you are eating refined grains, then it’s important to get your fibre from elsewhere. Here are some examples of refined grains: white flour, white rice and white bread. A plethora of cereals, crackers, pastries, breads and desserts are also made with refined grains.
Then there are enriched grains. Enriched actually means that some of the nutrients that are lost during processing are then retrospectively added back. Normally enriched grains are grains that have lost B vitamins placed back in to the foodstuffs— but generally not the lost fibre. These days most refined grains are enriched, and some times enriched grains can be fortified with other vitamins and minerals, such as iron. Whole grains can also be fortified and some consider this the best healthy bread.
