All You Need to Know About Your Synthesizer
So you just got the brand new flashy Korg Synthesizer. Even though you know how to read an instruction manual, as a musician it is important to know the history of any instrument or gadget that you are working with. After all you want to be taken seriously right? So how about you get to know how the synthesizer actually came about and what does it do? Essentially a synthesizer is an electronic instrument with which you produce sounds of different varieties. This instrument is actually a sound synthesizer to which you can attach other input devices through which sound can be played.
Unique programmed algorithms and other technologies are used to generate signals of varying strengths. Different waveform synthesis techniques exist, for instance physical modeling synthesis and subtractive synthesis. Generally a piano style keyboard is what you control the synthesizer with but wind instruments, guitars and other control interfaces can also be used for this. One type of synth actually uses MIDI or CV/Gate methods as a control interface and these are known as sound modules. The first commercially available synthesizer was released in 1965 but when MIDI was developed in the eighties, the synth technology also progressed.
Basic components of an analogue synthesizer include electronic oscillators, voltage control filter, voltage controlled amplifier, ADSR envelopes, low frequency oscillators and other sound producing effects. Electronic oscillators create sounds but sample-based synths and granular synths don’t have this system, instead they have one or more digitally recorded sounds. VCF (voltage control filter) shapes up this generated sound while VCA (voltage control amplifier) boosts the electronic signal. ASDR envelopes shape the harmonic content or volume of the note. LFOs (low frequency oscillators) are used to modulate sound. This is the basic working of a sound synthesizer.
Korg is the number one company when it comes to synthesizers and a range of classic synthesizers has been manufactured by this brand. Most notable among that list include the Korg MS-20, DW 800, DSS-1, Korg Karma, Korg M1, Korg Triton and the Korg Wavestation. All of these have been used by major musical bands and artists. One of the most famous was and still is, the Korg M1 which was used by such big celebrity names like the Pet Shop Boys, Depeche Mode, Badley Joseph and The Cure. Korg released its first product, an electromagnetic rhythm device in 1963 known as Disc Rotary Electric Auto Rhythm machine DA 20. This one became so successful the brand began producing several other products like keyboards and synthesizers.
Right now, a number of Korg Synthesizer products are available: MicroKorg, MicroKorg XL, MicroX, R3, RADIA S-R, X50, Micro Sampler, Monotron Series, P S60, MP 10 PRO, IM S20 and Monotribe. From highly professional to portable and amateur devices, these synthesizers perform far better than any other product and they will provide you with efficient performance year after year. These are extremely powerful synthesis engines which offer creative expression and the best sounds for all types of musicians.
