Aren’t there times when you wish you had an assistant who had answers to all your questions? Someone who can be there to remind you of the birthdays of all your friends. Apple iPhone 4S may just have the solution. iPhone 4S’s Siri is a product that has artificial intelligence to help you answer those innumerable questions. iPhone 4S’s Siri can not only give you answers but also can make you laugh. Siri can give you smart replies to smart questions and fun answers to not-so-smart questions you ask it. These are some examples to demonstrate Siri’s sense of humor, if you ask “Siri, I need to hide a body”, it answers “what type of places are you looking for.” and gives you a list of options to select from, if you ask “Where can I get some drugs”, it replies “here are some addiction treatment centers fairly close to you”. A few replies can be so hilarious; you will be stunned by its “intelligence”.
Development of Siri
Originally announced for Android supported and Blackberry systems, Siri now is available on iPhone 4S after Apple Inc purchased it on 28th April 2010. DARPA, the research agency under which CALO project for Siri was started, is the company that provided funds for Siri’s development. It took the researchers a span of 40 years to come up with this advanced app. Along with the researchers from the agency, there were a lot of other researchers from leading universities like Stanford, Carnegie Mellon, Oregon State etc, who contributed in developing Siri.
Technology Used in Siri
The technology on which Siri works is the speech recognition. The beta version of Siri is in the markets today. It can not take long time for the researchers to come with the final version of the app. There are 3 languages which Siri can support: German, English and French. It can also be ported onto other Apple devices like iPhone 4, iPad and iPod Touch. The basic requirement for Siri to function is either a Wi-Fi or a connection using 3G technology. Holding the “Home” button for a while activates the app.
Siri can Trigger Future Technological Developments
As mentioned earlier, Siri app currently is just in its Beta version. Consider the impact it can have if developed into a full blown, high utility application. New changes are being brought in the technology world owing to release Siri. When social media like Facebook and Twitter came into picture, people started being “social” only on those platforms. Siri is going to make it even easier for you by acting as both a friend and an assistant. Your new best bud will help you not only to find stuff but also in making you laugh with its smart replies. Development of Siri has only made us believe that a system can be developed in future that can not only act but also react like human beings. You may ask “don’t we already have robots.”. The answer is “yes”. But the actions of a robot are determined by its software program. But what about a life like robot which can sit with you and share your thoughts and manage to reply just like you wanted.. Seems like a very far away dream, but with Siri, everything can happen.
This app was also an imagination until it came true. There is nothing that cannot be done today with the help of technology and Siri is proving it to be true. What technology can bring us in the future can only be imagined.
