Nappy Rash – A Common Baby Problem
Nappy rash is a problem that usually affects the children and it is usually caused by dirty and wet nappies. It usually occurs in a situation where the baby’s skin is exposed to a wet condition for a very long time. The baby’s skin is very delicate and if a napkin that is wet from urine is left on the baby for a long time the germs on the napkin forms some sort of chemicals like ammonia that causes irritation on the baby’s skin. This is what causes the rashes. There are babies who have sensitive skins that these rashes usually develop at any part of their body. What triggers nappy rash is the ammonia that is in urine, candida which is usually found in faeces, chemicals that are in napkins, plastic pants, friction or rubbing.
If you want to avoid nappy rash (in Denmark they’re called Årsager til baby rød numse), it is advisable that you do not leave your baby for a long time on dirty and wet nappies. This is the main cause of nappy rashes and therefore to avoid it just ensure you keep changing your baby’s napkins (in Denmark they’re known as Følsom hud bleskift) from time to time. Also when washing the babies use pure soaps which are usually made for the babies and the clothes that are used to wipe them should not contain alcohol. If you want to prevent nappy rashes take time to check the kind of nappies that you use because some of them are the ones that causes nappy rash. Plastic napkins are usually discouraged.
Find ways to prevent nappy rash remember prevention is better than cure. I have already mentioned one of the ways which is to make sure that you change you baby’s napkins frequently, use napkins that can be disposed and absorb urine immediately hence leaving the child’s skin dry, use soaps that have been made for babies, clean the baby with plain water or sorbolene cream and ensure that the nappies that you use are well rinsed. Nappy rashes are very painful and doctors usually advise that you use pain reliefs and if you find that your baby is uncomfortable you can use paracetamol.
Some of the signs that your child is suffering from nappy rash include the blistering of the skin, ulcers near the area where the rash appears, inflamed skin particularly near the anus and the genital area etc. These rashes are very sore and the baby will be very uncomfortable particularly when they pass urine and the urine comes into contact with the rush. Babies are usually woken up by the pain and sleeping is a usual problem during this time.
Nappy rush is not an ailment that one should joke about. It is not good not only for the baby but also for both parents because it forces them to stay awake for 24 hours just to take care of the baby. The best way to avoid this ailment is to ensure that the baby’s bottom is kept dry and exposed to the air and you should use absorbent clothes.
