Top 5 Qualities – Must For All Managers and Bosses and Also in B-School Syllabus
Most of B-Schools in the world teach how to set business strategy, implement them, achieve targets, and run a successful business by adopting materialistic and statistical approaches in the business processes. There are very few B-Schools in the world which include below mentioned quality enhancement points in their curriculum. As a Boss or Manager of an organization, one has to be consistent in his or her behavior with below given 5 Points apart from monitoring and improving statistics and figures of the business.
From an employee’s point of view every boss or manager is a star. But from boss’ or manager’s point of view, one has to be gracious and careful while enjoying the stardom. Remarkable bosses aren’t great on paper. Great bosses are remarkable based on their actions.
Consistently do these five things and everything else follows. You and your business benefit greatly. More importantly, so do your employees.
1. Focus on Skill Development and Capacity Enhancement
Of course one has concentrate on reaching targets, achieving successful results, at the same time leadership has to remain on front then the achievements. No amount of focus or goals will ever deliver unless you have capable employees. It is the responsibility of mentor to continuously enhance the capacity of each and every section of an organization, be them Man, Machine or Money. When you do take care of capacity enhancement, you don’t need to follow a boring and intimidating process of reviewing and tracking performances.
So, put your worries about targets and goals aside and spend most of your time in developing the skills of your employees and achieving targets and goals will be a natural outcome. Plus it’s a lot more fun and adds value to your stardom.
2. Tackle the issues on ASAP Basis
Issues and problems, which remain unresolved for longer time, disturb the overall working environment, kill team’s morale and affects employees’ efficiency. Inter personal and departmental disputes, performance issues, all have a big negative impact on employee motivation and enthusiasm. Never hope a problem will magically go away, or that someone else will deal with it. Deal with every issue head-on, no matter how small. Plus, your ignorance to such problems will affect your respect and without respect, you can’t lead.
3. Take care of Worst Employees
Almost every team has at least one member who has failed to complete the task assigned, or has committed other serious mistake, or just can’t keep himself or herself up to the mark. Overtime he or she becomes burden on the organization and team may want him to leave. Over time that employee comes to be seen by his peers—and by you—as a weak link. The impact of team’s disapproval is so big that he can’t keep cool and he may not rehabilitate himself. But for you it is quite easy to motivate and help him to remain cool while dealing with day to day affairs of the company. Show him confidence in his abilities. Tell him, “Let us together work out the solutions to problems you are facing”.
And occasionally an employee will succeed—and you will have made a tremendous difference in a person’s professional and personal life.
4. Help others to help you
I had very bad experience when I asked my previous employer, “I am not able to focus on my own personal work because of office’s work load (which was more than what I was committed). Please help me soft that issue out.” And he said, “It is your problem, only you can think of it”. Then I realized that he was not only selfish but a “short-sighted selfish”.
There is nothing wrong in being selfish, but one has to be “farsighted selfish”. Help others to help you, create a kind of work strategy which can be an obligation to others. Such obligations are not only returned back in form of duty but also add value to your stardom, increase respect for you.
5. Don’t forget your Past
At least for some of your employees you are famous, star, in charge, boss, especially to new employees. An employee or your fellow team member may want to talk about something that seems inconsequential may just want to spend a few moments with you. This is something similar to the time when you begun your journey. When that happens, you have a choice. Either you can blow the employee off… or you can see the moment for its true importance: A chance to inspire, reassure, motivate, and even give someone hope for greater things in their life. The higher you rise the greater the impact you can make and the greater your responsibility to make that impact.
Don’t forget your past and be gracious with your stardom.
This is something which every B-school should have in its curriculum.
