Should you consult employees before an office revamp?
It is important to have a good relationship with your employees, but do you need to consult them about the decor of their workspace?
On the one hand, as the boss you are essentially paying for any office makeover or additional equipment, so it is pretty much up to you how much you want to spend on their mouse mat or cupboard.
However, on the other hand, you want your team to be as productive as possible, so motivating them with the furniture they want and ensuring they are as comfortable as possible could prove to be worth the investment in the long term.
The vital distinction to make is between how much you are spending and which items you end up buying. The former should be decided by you and your chief finance officer, with little or no input from any of the rest of the team; you can always reassess later if there is sufficient need for it. The latter is more of a negotiation.
While it may not have a huge impact on your overall operations, it could prove to be motivational to let a team pick their own furniture, for instance choosing the style of desk chairs. Office workers may even be prouder of their working environment if they have had some input in choosing what was ordered.
But before you go out into the wider office and begin canvassing opinion on which is a more productive colour between red and black, think about the logistics of this procedure. It may be wise to have each team select a representative and then ask them into a meeting, at which they can present the opinions of their colleagues.
This way, you can gauge what your employees feel strongly about without needing to devote too much time to the project. Make sure you do not let office refurbishments become a distraction for your team though; stay in control of negotiations at all times.
