Adult Education Vs Community College
A few years ago, I attended an adult education school. It was great. I had tried a community college program before and thought I like it, until I tried this center. The classes at the adult school were concise and didn’t contain any filler classes.
I feel like I have wasted those three years at the community college. Some of the classes were not necessary and wasted my time. There were breaks in between classes that were sometimes three hours long.
Flexibility is not something found in community colleges. The start dates are as rigid as the class times. There were only two start dates, September or January. The class times were set and that’s were you went. Think about it. I was paying them to control my life for three years. How much sense does that make?
Some days, we would begin early, and some days not till noon. Other days, we would work late or finish early. Keeping a part time job and going to school was stressful and confusing. It was difficult to keep classes, exams, assignments, and work hours all in order.
After not landing a job in my sector, I decided to go back to school. This time I was smarter. I decided to go to an adult education center for the main fact that it was only 8 months long and came out with a diploma and the community college version was two years.
I loved this school classes began at 8am and ended at 1pm everyday. There were small breaks during classes in which we were allowed to leave and come back. The programs were concise and to the point.
The way the classes were organized was great. It was one subject at a time. Usually it would be two weeks, however sometimes they were one and three weeks long. I never had to worry about assignments for different classes or more than one test at a time. It was great.
The adult school provided an employment specialist. She would help us write resumes and prepare for interviews. She gave us an inside scoop on what employers were looking for and some interesting techniques to get the job.
Before community college, I did attend university for one year. I did not like it at all. My teachers did not even know I existed. There were 300 people in my class and it was basically learn on your own. I did not like that experience at all.
I rank the first one I attended, university, the worst. It was a lot like the community college except the class sizes were larger. The community college is second, because of the ability to get to know your classmates and teachers. The adult education center is first because of all the reason above; class size, flexibility, time to complete, and daily schedule.
