Outside of the four “majors” of golf, the Ryder cup is perhaps the most exciting event in the golf calendar. Instead of players battling on their own for prizemoney, the best players from Europe and America compete every two years for sheer pride and prestige.

The tournament begins on the 1st of October and finishes on the 3rd of October 2010.
Where is the 2010 Ryder Cup?
The Celtic Manor resort on the outskirts of Newport, Wales in the UK. Matches will be played on the brand new “twenty ten” course – built specifically for such a grand competition.
Some facts about the Celtic Manor include:
In common with many hotels, the Celtic Manor has no rooms which end “13”. It also has no room 666 or, interestingly, no Room 1066.
The Resort is home to one of the largest collections of Welsh art to be found anywhere. It is also the home of Welsh-Italian artist Andrew Vicari.
A time capsule is buried underneath the lobby area and is scheduled to be opened in 2100.
A grand piano belonging to rock star Alice Cooper is a feature of one of the Resort’s Presidential suites.
It is possible to see the Second Severn Crossing bridge from the lobby level bar windows.

How are the teams picked?
Both teams are made up of twelve players, but are picked in slightly different ways.
In Europe, the top five players from the European Tour list and the Official World Golf rankings list are selected automatically. The other two selections are wildcards, selected by the captain.
In America, the top eight players go in via their ranking points. The other four are captain’s picks – the captain has the right to pick who he wants. This system was brought in in 2008. The USA system is weighted so that performances in major championships are given more ranking points.

Tickets are available at www.rydercup.com/tickets via a draw that will take place in August 2009. Both successful and unsuccessful applications will be confirmed via email.

Why is there no Ryder Cup in 2009?
The Ryder Cup only occurs ever two years – the last one was in 2008 so there will be no competition in 2009.
Why was there no Ryder Cup in 2001?
The 2001 event was postponed until 2002 because of the September 11th bombings in New York.
