Westborough: A brief outline

Westborough is a beautiful town located in Worcester County, Massachusetts. According to the 2010 census, the population of this town was 18,272.

Political conditions:

Westborough is under the New England form of governance as a result of which it uses an open town meeting system. There is a Board of Selectmen which consists of five men who are elected. They perform work relating to administration, licensing etc. The residents of the town are also quite active as they are allowed to participate in the two meeting once a year. The meeting can be called based on necessity as well.

Industries:

The history of the industrial progression in this town can be attributed to a native of Westborough, Eli Whitney Junior, who invented the cotton gin. His legacy can be seen in the industrial development in the town nowadays. Some of the industries located here are- Dover Electric, EMC Corporation, AstraZeneca, Bose Corporation, IBM, Proteon etc. The headquarters of American Superconductor is also located in this town.

Historical Places

Westborough is a town that has a wealth of historical places to boast of. Some of them include the Nathan Fisher House, the Jonah Warren House, Maples Cottage, West Main Street Historic Distric, Joseph Lothrop House, Lyman School for Boys, Vintonville Historic District, Westborough State Hospital etc. If you are a tourist in this town, you will certainly not run out of places to visit as all these places are registered with the state and have cultural and historical significance.

Education:

There are many options for education starting from elementary school upwards. The graduation levels in the Westborough high schools have always been quite high- around 95%. A vast majority of this 95% is also well known to attend college!

Westborough also boasts of a public library that has been around since 1857 and still happens to be one of the best libraries in the state. It boasts of thousands of tomes, some of which have immense historical importance.

Media:

There are many different streams media in Westborough. There are state run channels of media that operate along side the private ones as well. The most popular forms of media in Westborough include newspapers, radio and the television. Some of the most popular newspapers in the town (the ones with the maximum readership) include the Boston Globe, the Boston Herald, MetroWest Daily News, The Telegram and Gazette. The Westborough News is also quite big. The Westborough High School Literary Magazine is one of the best things that come out of the high schools in the state and it is well known for its high standards.

Radio stations in Westborough include PBS, CBS, ABC, FOX, NBC and Univision. There are many public access, educational and government TV channels that operate in Westborough. Channel 11 is the public access one, Channel 13 is for education and the Channel 12 is the government access television channel.
