Foreclosure is an epidemic in the United States today. The numbers are staggering and at this point are climbing. One of the worst cities here is Detroit, Michigan. There are and were many reasons for this decline. Let’s start from the earliest indicators of what happened. It really makes a person want to take a vacation away from their troubles. One of the best ways is to take one of many short breaks in France and other desirable destinations.
The racial scene was a hotbed of unrest in the early 60’s in Detroit. Although many African Americans lived in Detroit due to the great migration of the 40’s and 50’s, where the automotive companies recruited them for the cheap labor and long hours, still the majority of people were of Caucasian descent.
They were segregated to specific areas of the city, and racism was rampant. Nineteen Sixty-seven was an especially hot summer, but really who knows what sparked the riot. That summer spawned a new feeling in the city: fear. Most white families held on during the next few years, but as racial resentment grew, white flight to the suburbs also grew. Demographically, a void was created. Population began to dwindle during the 70’s and the fallout was initially a large drop in property values.
This situation was really the bell ringer of foreclosure. As values dropped, those whites who held on were forced to leave because the value of their homes and the appreciation in value they had experienced, evaporated. Soon even reduced values could not stem the tide, and many homes and business simply were abandoned, leaving the devastated neighbourhoods to fend for themselves.
Now, moving forward to the Nineties and beyond, even black families who could better themselves have left the city for the suburbs. All that is left for Detroit is one solution: consolidation. Many city services are stretched to the breaking point, because block by block, a high number of foreclosures are leaving a small percentage of inhabited homes, and things like water and sewage, trash pickup, lighting, etc. are providing services where few if any taxpayers actually live. These small pockets of homeowners must be moved into a higher density area, and the outer areas of wasteland must be closed off and shut down.
After all this strife and despair, people need to get away for the weekend or an extended period, perhaps as long as a week or two. No matter what ethnic background you come from; you are going to want to take one of those short breaks in France like we said before! Something to clear your head and stop worrying about lost properties, perhaps your own home in this instance.
