Ajmer, A Trip To The Cultural City of Rajasthan
Ajmer, which is the fifth largest city of Rajasthan, is a popular tourist destination in India. Ajmer city0, earlier known as Ajmere or Ajaymeru, belongs to the Ajmer district of Rajasthan and it lies at about 135 km away to the west of state capital Jaipur.
Ajmer, founded in the 7th century AD by Raja Ajay Pal Chauhan, served as the royal seat of Chauhan Dynasty for many decades. Ajmer became famous under the reign of Prithvi Raj Chauhan and it became a part of Sultanate of Delhi when Mohammed Ghauri defeated Prithvi Raj Chauhan in 1193 AD. In 1365, the ruler of Mewar captured Ajmer and thenceforth it became a constant target of the ruler of Marwar. The Mughal Emperor Akbar conquered Ajmer in 1559 and it fell under the rule of Marathas in the 18th century. Ajmer witnessed the alternate conquests and subsequent rule by the rajas of Mewar and Marwar until 1818. In 1818, the Marathas sold Ajmer to the British and it became Ajmer-Merwara Province. Ajmer, post Indian Independence, became an independent state in 1950 and it merged in to Rajasthan in 1956.
Ajmer is a popular Hindu and Muslim pilgrimage destination situated on the lower slopes of taragarh on the Aravalli ranges, surrounded by mountains. Nagpathar range or Serpent rock separates Ajmer from Thar Desert. Ajmer has a hot climate throughout the year with average maximum temperature of 40 °C during summer (April to July) and 18 °C during winter (December to March). The peak tourist season in Ajmer is from Novemberr to March when the weather is mild and pleasant.
The major tourist attraction in Ajmer is the Dargah Shareef of sufi saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti, which is located at the base of the Taragarh hill. Taragarh Fort, Digambar Jain temple (Soni Ji Ki Nasiyan), Anasagar Lake, Ajmer Museum, Adhai Din Ka Jhonpra, the Nimbark Peeth, Nareli Jain temple, etc. are the other prime tourist destinations in Ajmer. Ajmer also offers Pushkar (14 km) which is famous for Brhma Temple, Pushkar Lake and annual Camel Fair.
Ajmer is easily accessible as it is well connected by rail, road and air. The nearest airport to Ajmer is the Jaipur International Airport. Ajmer is an important railway station with Broad gauge lines as well as a Metre gauge line. Ajmer can be reached from all the major destinations in India, as it is located on the Golden Quadrilateral National Highway (NH) 8.
