Bhimtal, Located in The Nainital District of Uttarakhand
Bhimtal is a famous lake resort and a hill station in Northern India located in the Nainital District of Uttarakhand. Situated at an altitude of 1370 meters above the sea level, Bhimtal is a small hill town at a distance about 22 km away from Nainital and 11 km from Bhowali.
Early historical records of Bhimtal are obscure. Bhimtal, perched among verdant mountains, was an important part of the ancient silk route as it was a stoppage for the travellers from hills to plains and vice versa. The old pedestrial route is still in use at Bhimtal and it connects Bhimtal to Kathgodam and all Kumaon regions and even up to Tibet and Nepal. Bhimtal has mythical importance as the place is named after mighty Bhim of Panchapandavas of the epic Mahabharata. The major attraction of Bhimtal is its large lake ‘Bhimtal’, which act as a stopover for the migratory birds during . As per the legends, Bhima built the Bhimeshwara Mahadev Temple on the embankments of the lake. Later, Baz Bahadur of Chand Dynasty and Raja of Kumaon reconstructed it during the 17th century. Post Anglo-Nepalese war during 1814 – 1818, Bhimtal came under the direct rule of the British.

The lake Bhimtal, the prime tourist attraction of Bhimtal offers an island to its northeast side, which is about 91.4 meters from the shore. Other important attractions of Bhimtal include Garg Parvat, which the source of River Gargi (Gola Nadi), Folk Cultural Museum and the Nag Temple. Bhimtal also offers destinations such as Nal Damayanti Tal (2 km), Godhakhel Temple (3 km), Naukuchiatal (4 km), Sat Tal (7 km) and Vankhandi Ashram (5 km) to its visitors.
Bhimtal covers larger area than its counterpart Nainital and this region is a famous destination for excursions from Nainital and Haldwani. Bhimtal also offers opportunities in trekking, boating and paddling to its visors. The climate of Bhimtal is pleasant during summer and cold during winter. March to mid-October is the peak tourist season in Bhimtal.
Bhimtal is easily accessible by road as it is well connected with Nainital and Kathgodam by bus and taxis. The nearest airport to Bhimtal is situated at Pant Nagar, which is about 55 km away and the nearest railway station is situated at Kathgodam, which is 21 km away.
