Does divorce mean the end of a friendship too?
A divorce is a clean break in a lot of ways – yet it does not have to mean the end of a platonic relationship between two people.
For many couples, the reason for seeing a divorce lawyer is not because they are at each other’s throats, but simply because they have become housemates rather than lovers. In this situation there is often still a real sense of friendship and platonic love there, so there is no reason why they should not keep in contact.
If you are going through a divorce and you are not sure whether you should maintain regular contact with your ex, you should think carefully about your circumstances; having a proper discussion about the situation with your former partner. It may be worth trying to have an initial break of a few months after the legal proceedings just to let matters die down.
When children are involved your feelings become secondary, since you want what is best for your offspring. This often means you will see your ex a great deal but not in social situations.
What about if you do not have children and simply want some familiar company though? The key issue to keep in mind is your feelings; you do not want to give your partner hope of a reunion if that is not what you want and vice versa. Be clear with them at all points though and you may find that divorce is good for your relationship on a platonic level.
The reduced expectations and the greater level of independence mean you can form an easy-going friendship based on years of trust. However, make sure you are not kidding yourself about why you are continuing to see your former husband or wife.
You must be ready to move on to a new life in which the two of you are completely separate, even if you still see each other.
