The Evolution of Nokia Smartphones
Nokia smartphones’ history started with their very first slider cellphone Nokia 7650. Those days, the majority of holders didn’t even realize that they bought a smartphone. The new Nokia phone was innovative not only because it was trendy, but also because it had a rather large number of abilities, such as an almost unlimited phonebook, an embedded camera, inboard email client, in addition to lots of standard applications. This phone was released in 2002 and had one of the first Symbian versions.
I should probably mention the platform’s origin. First, Symbian’s shareholders were companies Nokia, Ericsson, Pison and Motorola. Next, a few additional companies, like Sony and Samsung, joined them. The idea was to have an open source platform that could be used for most of devices. Truth is, around the year 2000 Nokia tried various experiments concerning smartphones and software systems, in an attempt to advance in the smartphone field. Unluckily only a small number of their products gained many users.
Symbian’s prototype was Pison’s EPO32 system. The general idea was to optimize its features with scarce resources. For example, developers were successful in minimizing power consumption by means of caching improvement. By the way, the platform was pretty successful at the time of founding Nokia’s smartphone development. Among widespread updates of Symbian operating system became Symbian^3 and the modified edition Symbian Anna. The last alterations involved mostly UI changes, for example cool new icons, an improved browser look. Moreover, it became more oriented for business. More specifically, its performance grew faster and more energy-efficient.
Yet with the course of time partners that were part of the founding of Symbian Foundation pulled away to work on Google Android and other technologies. On December 17, 2010 most websites involved with Symbian Foundation, even Symbian.org, were stopped. From that moment, only Nokia phones were still acting on Symbian platform.
