Samsung SGH-U740 Review
The Samsung SCH-U740 is a cutting edge new phone that is specifically designed for Verizon and their CDMA network. At first glance, it may be mistaken for just a simple clamshell flip phone style design, but upon closer inspection, the phone is much, much more than that. Instead of featuring a simple flip phone design, it actually has a dual hinge display that is very unique to the world of cell phones. It flips open like a clamshell phone would, but it can also rotate along its flip axis, in a way that is very similar to a tablet notebook computer. This extra rotation allows the phone to resemble a T-Mobile Sidekick style phone that is perfect for sending text messages and emails – a very strong point of the Samsung SCH-U740, giving it almost smart phone functionality thanks to its full QWERTY keyboard layout.
As would be expected from any high end Samsung phone, the Samsung SCH-U740 comes complete with features, such as the ability to access the V Cast music and video service for straight-to-your-phone downloads of all of the most popular songs and videos that Verizon has to offer. It is unfortunate that this service costs an extra fee for its use, but that is not really the phone’s fault. The Samsung SCH-U740 also comes complete with Bluetooth technology built in, so that you can transfer files quickly and wirelessly to and from the phone to your computer or any other phones that you want to send data to. Data can also be sent quickly via the CDMA EVDO data network, one of the fastest in the cellular phone industry.
Data transfer and text messaging may be the strongest points of the Samsung SCH-U740, but those are certainly not all of the tricks that it packs under its clamshell. It features a camera capable of decent images, although there is no dedicated camera key on the phone’s exterior for ease of use.
As with all modern phones, there are a couple of glaring problems with the Samsung SCH-U740. While it is marketed as a media phone, the SCH-U740’s screen is rather subpar. Even though the display gets its job done, it is nowhere near as good as some of the displays on other Samsung phones – a real disappointment for a phone that is designed with a media centric mindset. Furthermore, the battery life is not exceptionally spectacular either, especially when accessing some of the media functionality.
Pros
-Unique dual hinge design with solid construction
-Full QWERTY keypad
-Takes full advantage of Verizon’s V Cast media delivery service
-Has many of the features that consumers have come to expect from modern high end phones
-Variety of ways to transfer data
Cons
-Battery life could be better
-No dedicated camera button
-Screen could be better
Overall
The Samsung SCH-U740 is perhaps the most modern of all modern phones (until Apple’s iPhone hits the market). It combines all of the quick data transfer and media functions that people want with a definite emphasis on text messaging and emailing, making it the phone to have if you are a multimedia junkie. Unless you are not a fan of the color options, there is really no reason not to get this phone.
