Samsung SCH-U550 Review
The Samsung SCH-U550 from Verizon Wireless is a slight upgrade from the SCH-U540. It is aimed at the entry-level segment of the cell phone market. It is easy to use and boasts good voice quality but is not designed with any high-end features. Many consumers like it because it is sold at a relatively budget friendly price.
Upon purchasing the Samsung SCH-U550, you will receive a retail package which includes the Samsung SCH-U550, a wall charger, a 800 mAh battery with a cover and a user manual.
While the Samsung SCH-U550 is very standard and classical in its look, this flip phone has a more up-to-date and classically modern look than the models that came before it. The pewter-gold color of the casing is very becoming to the eye. On the front of the U550 there is an inlayed two-tone plastic facing. This is where the external display can be found as well as the 1.3 MP camera and the touch-sensitive music control buttons.
The external display of the Samsung SCH-U550 is the same one that can be found on the Samsung Gleam. It is a small 1-inch 96 x 96 pixel resolution TFT. The display is capable of allowing up to 65k colors to show up. Despite the small size, you can check the date and time with the lovely analog clock. Also, you can view the indicator icons and see which MP3 track is currently playing.
The internal display is the exact same as that of its predecessor. It is a 2.1 inch 262k color TFT. The resolution is 176 x 220 pixels, which is decent enough considering the market the phone is aimed at. In fact, many users find the picture quality very attractive.
The d-pad at the top of the cell phone is square in shape and makes for simple navigation. The only downside is that there are no backlights for the up, down, left and right arrows. This makes navigation a little tricky in the dark but it can be overlooked in many cases. When it comes to dialing and sending texts, the numeric keys are smooth and large. However, thumb and finger placement can be tricky as there are no ribbed grooves to the keypad.
The camera on the Samsung SCH-U550 features video recording capabilities, digital zoom and night shot for conditions when there is less light. The phone also features Bluetooth wireless capabilities for a number of items including headsets, hands free, dial-up networking profiles, serial port, not to mention object push for vCard.
VCAST Video is possible by way of the U550, as is Verizon Wireless’ multimedia service for news, sports as well as entertainment video clips. You can also have access to 3D games and VCAST Music. The music library makes the owner of this phone privy to 2.7 million full-length songs that can easily be purchased and downloaded.
