Musings Of A Liverpool Fan From London
Because I grew up in London yet have always supported Liverpool, I have always been accused of being a glory hunter by all of my friends because they all supported our local team, Crystal Palace. I would attend games at Selhurst Park with them and cheer on Palace but deep down there was only one team that I ever was really truly devoted to, and that was Liverpool. This is due to the fact that when I was growing up my grandfather lived with us and he was the person that taught me to appreciate the intricate nuances and beauties of the beautiful game. He had grown up on Merseyside and so was a die-hard Liverpool fan and I consequently followed suit, even to the extent of despising Everton.
These days, a decade or so later, I still travel up to Liverpool from London to watch Kenny Dalglish’s men play at Anfield and this season it has generally been a hugely satisfying experience despite having to schlep 250 miles in either direction. This is because we have been in such superb form this season due to the creative brilliance of Luis Suarez, Charlie Adam and Steven Gerrard who seems finally to have shaken off the niggling groin injury that has been troubling him for the last eighteen months or so. Though the best we can really hope for in the league is to finish fourth, that will be an improvement on last season and will mean that we are playing in the Champions League come next season.
Sometimes I fly up to Liverpool when I can find really cheap flights, in which case I stay in a Liverpool airport hotel as there are excellent transport links between the airport and the stadium, though if I drive I usually book myself into one of the cheaper Liverpool city centre hotels. There are dozens of very reasonably priced establishments throughout the town centre that are ideally placed for enjoying a few pints in one of the Liverpool FC pubs celebrating victories after great matches by singing terrace songs standing on the bar.
