Two Men Held in Hit-and-Run Accident

Yanelle Lucero, a kindergartner at McNab Elementary in Fort Lauderdale, died after being struck by a van inside of her mobile home park this past week. The family was getting ready to leave for a barbecue, and the five-year-old girl jumped on her Big Wheel to go and get her sister who was playing a few homes away. The accident has shaken residents of the mobile home community, as well as Yanelle’s classmates who remembered with fondness the little girl who had come to school as Rapunzel for Halloween.

The driver who allegedly killed the girl is being held without bond pending an immigration investigation. Nineteen-year-old Erik Garcia, a Mexican citizen, is being charged by Fort Lauderdale police with failure to remain at an accident involving a death, failure to exercise due care, and driving without a license. The owner of the van, also 19, was charged with permitting an unauthorized person to drive his vehicle, tampering with evidence, and driving with a suspended license. Mario Alonso Argumedo is also charged in another unrelated drug case.

The death of the little girl is illustrative of the tragic loss of life that can occur when those who have no business driving a vehicle get behind the wheel of a car. Whether it is driving while impaired, driving without a license, or driving at excessive speeds, when erratic driving occurs, people are injured and lives are lost. There is not anything that can be done now to bring back the five-year-old girl whose mother described her as “perfect in every sense.” Even if the mother were to hire an accident lawyer in Fort Lauderdale, at this point, in order to pursue a wrongful death claim against the men responsible, it is not likely that there would be much compensation available to her.

However, that reality should not deter anyone who has been injured in an accident or who has lost a loved one in an accident from pursuing all legal means available for compensation and restitution. Often times, the successful resolution of a civil case is the only closure and resolution that some victims get following an accident. The only way to pursue such forms of remuneration is with the help of a qualified and knowledgeable accident lawyer in Fort Lauderdale.

If you have been injured in an accident that was not your fault, or if you have lost a loved one through the negligence or recklessness of another, you may be entitled to compensation. Talk with a lawyer today to determine if you should move forward with a civil suit.
