RMA: What Does This Mean to Consumers

The term RMA (which stands for either return of materials or return of merchandise authorization) is an important one for the consumer to get to grips with, even though many of you may not be aware as to its exact meaning. It is a process whereby consumers must return a product to be repaired or replaced in order to receive a refund from the selling agent or retailer, and must be undertaken during a products original warranty period. So why is this an important process for you as a consumer to understand?

Dealing with the Return of Purchased Goods

In essence, the RMA process is mostly used in the electronics industry, but can also be adopted in any retail environment as part of a service agreement. It is something which provides protection to both retailers and consumers, as long as you remember its core purposes:

  • If you are returning a faulty product to claim a refund, you are removing any potentially dangerous item from your home. As long as the return has been agreed in principle with the manufacturer, this ensures that a faulty product will be retained by the retailer is not used mistakenly by someone within
  •  your home.
  • The RMA process is also in place to protect retailers from issuing false or undue refunds, especially in the case where a consumer is claiming that an item is damaged. It also allows them to repair the offending item and resell it at a discounted price.
  • An RMA creates a set guideline for interaction between you as a consumer and manufacturers, and ensures that any product returns are well regulated and authorized in advance. It is often part of any reputable traders service agreement with its customers.

Keep these purposes in mind when it comes to returning goods, and ensure that you meet the individual requirements of each retailer. This is especially important if you are seeking a store credit to purchase a new item, as the items that you resend to the manufacturer must be packaged as new and in perfect working condition.
