Being A West Bromwich Albion Fan That Lives In Chelsea
I grew up in Shrewsbury and so I have always been a Baggie as they were my local team that was in a reasonably high division. These days we are the Premiership, though we had been a yo-yo team for a few seasons, bouncing between the Championship and Premiership, too good for the lower league but not quite strong enough to cement a place in the top flight. This seems to have changed since the arrival of Roy Hodgson however, as he has instilled a confidence and stability in the spine of the team that means we are able to keep the clean sheets that are necessary to get points in the Premiership. We are then able to hit teams on the counter-attack thanks to the pace of our strikers – Shane Long and Odemwingie – combined with the ability of our midfielders – Morrison, Malumbu and Gera – to open up opposition defences with piercing passing.
Because I live in Chelsea all of my friends are Chelsea fans and so it was particularly fun to tease them following last weekend’s victory over them at the Hawthorns that has resulted in Roman Abramovich sacking his manager Villas-Boas after just forty games in charge and having paid £13.5 million to Porto to secure the 34 year old’s services. Saying that, the decision to sack him was not all that surprising considering the fact that Chelsea currently lie fifth in the table, four points behind Arsenal, and they trail 3-1 to Napoli following the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final against the Italian team. There is talk of Mourinho returning to Stamford Bridge in the summer, but in the mean time Roberto Di Matteo – former Chelsea player and first team coach that still holds the record for the fastest goal in an FA Cup final – will take over the reigns for the remainder of the campaign in the hope of securing Champions League qualification for next season.
I went to the Hawthorns last week to watch the game against Chelsea and ended up staying in a cheap Birmingham hotel, as I couldn’t find anywhere that was in my price range that was nearer the stadium. In the past I have even ended up staying in cheap hotels in Derby when traveling north to games due to the fact that I often leave booking until the last minute in the hope of getting fantastic reductions, only to find that everywhere is booked up.
