Desso: The Lasting Enterprize Model
The carpet tile producers, Desso, have signed up to Cradle to Cradle?. This means that in agreeing to a participation agreement with the Hamburg-based Environmental Protection Encouragement Agency (EPEA), Desso has emerged as the first carpet manufacturer in EMEA to adopt the Cradle to Cradle? business model.
Cradle to Cradle? is a circular business model, modelled on nature’s ecosystems, which models human enterprise on nature’s processes in which materials are circulated in strong and safe ecosystems. In its elementary form it means that the materials and energy that go into the cycle can be recycled creating an unceasing cycle that is excess free. In practice, this means that products are made from purified components that are simple to disassemble, in order to create new products (up cycling). They will have been produced using manufacturing processes which depend on renewable energy, and which look to conserve water, and to embrace social responsibility.
In embracing this model, it’s now not only important to Desso to make good quality products. Under this vision, quality entails more than the tangible properties of the product, but also its effects on humans and the environment in the widest sense possible. Desso’s aim is that their carpet tiles will be positively designed products – with careful choice of good materials that do not harm health or environment. Products will be manufactured from materials which can be recycled, thus re-entering the technical cycle and will be designed for disassembly to improve recyclability.
This will be executed in a number of ways. In 2010, Desso launched EcoBase?; a new carpet tile backing that is one hundred per cent safely recyclable in its own production process. The use of recycled yarn is also key. Desso is now launching over sixty per cent of its carpet tile range with Econyl? yarn; a yarn made from one hundred per cent recycled content. Econyl? is produced from recycled post-industrial and post consumer carpet waste, and is fully recyclable at the end of its life. The recycling process is economically and ecologically sustainable.
The London Business School has incorporated Desso as a case study into it’s syllabus as an example of how a company has embarked on the difficult journey of remodelling their business according to Cradle to Cradle? design. The Case Study focuses on the decision to move the business to Cradle to Cradle? design and highlights what Desso has done to date to implement the change. The London Business School puts forward the view that in embedding Cradle to Cradle? practice into its business strategy, Desso is proving that companies can reengineer their manufacturing practices to produce products that are safe for human use and are safely recyclable on a continuous basis.
They put forward the view that in the circular economic model, Desso’s products will be made of pure materials, designed for disassembly at the end of their life. This helps to solve three global crises: resource scarcity, toxicity dangerous to humans and the environment, and climate change. And it enables Desso to create a competitive edge using a forward thinking model in which its environmental footprint will be one hundred per cent good from the outset.
