Convert Canon EOS 550D highly compressed MOV video to Final Cut Pro or FCPX

High-definition video capture has rapidly become a must-have feature in this year’s digital SLRs, with advanced amateurs and budget-minded professionals alike excited by the possibility of using the same camera body and lenses for both still and mo vie shooting. Most digital SLR video modes to date have had limitations in terms of control and output formats that have tempered this excitement somewhat, however.

The Canon EOS 550D is an 18.0 megapixel digital single-lens reflex camera, announced by Canon on February 8, 2010. It was made available starting February 24, 2010 and to US dealers starting early March. It is known as the EOS Kiss X4 in Japan, and as the EOS Rebel T2i in North America. It continues the entry level digital SLR camera series (known as Rebel line in North America) of Canon, and is currently placed by Canon as the successor model to the EOS 500D, and has been superseded by the EOS 600D (T3i).

The Canon Rebel T2i’s includes similar video functionality to that of Canon’s semi-pro EOS 7D model, with an unusually robust feature set that gives the photographer more control over their mov ies, as well as the ability to record audio from an external source. Both shutter and aperture are available for manual control, and the T2i also provides multiple frame rate options, including three that match the HD television timing specs. Unlike most digital SLR video modes including the EOS 7D, the Canon T2i caters to advanced amateurs by allowing continuous autofocus during video recording, albeit with AF noise clearly picked up by the T2i’s internal microphone. Pros will likely want to control focus manually regardless, but amateurs will need to decide whether the convenience of AF is worth the drawbacks.

I’m in the market for a new DSLR and I’m liking the look/features of Canon’s newer EOS range that support HD mo vie recording.
