Samsung SCH-U520 Review
The Samsung SCH-U520 of Alltel delivers a new cell phone interface which allows its users to organize information on the SCH-U520’s display without the need to go through different menus in order to find what the user is looking for. This makes it convenient for the user since all the information in the phone is accessible. This is a step towards making cell phones easier to use and more convenient.
The phone also offers a few notable features such as a 1.3 megapixel camera, Bluetooth technology, speakerphone, and a microSD card slot, however, the design and call quality of the SCH – U20 is uneven and unexceptional which highlights certain flaws of the phone. This is appropriate since the phone can be purchased for a reasonable price of $59 with service.
The Samsung SCH-U520 may not be the slimmest phone that Samsung has created, but it certainly is slim enough to be able to fit in people’s pockets and can be easily carried around. The 1.92?3.74?1.0-inch 2.96-ounce slim phone still allows its users to comfortably hold the phone in their hands despite the size and style of the phone. This flip-type phone is great for people who favors simple styling since the color scheme of the phone is a basic black color with simple unassuming lines highlighting the SCH-U520. Though it may appear solid enough, certain parts of the phone, more specifically the plastic face, feels a tad cheap.
The SCH-U520 supports photo caller ID, which is made possible since the SCH-U520 is a phone that is compatible with videos and pictures. The basic orientation of the phones features basically are arranged with the dedicated keys for the music player located below the display, while further down are the stereo speakers. The camera lens, on the other hand, sit above the display with certain lighting settings for different situations.
Several buttons for the volume rocker and the camera shutter/speakerphone are situated on the right and left spines of the phone, making it more accessible, but not any less confusing at times for its users. Accessing these buttons in order to activate certain features can become very difficult, especially if you have very large fingers since these buttons require different styles of pressing in order to access the right feature. For instance, the button on the right spine activates the camera together with its video viewing functions, and you need to press longer if you want to access the video instead of the camera. The left spine also contains the covered headset jack and a MicroSD card slot.
The phone boasts of a 2-inch 262,000-color display which produces bright and vivid graphics and pictures. However, one downside as with other Samsung units is the images on the display disappear when exposed to direct sunlight.
Navigation controls for the SCH-U520 is flat with the surface of the phone due to its slim style and design. This creates slippery and intangible controls, thereby making it difficult for users to dial the buttons. However, the large buttons compensate for such flaws, giving the user a much better control at dialing. A four-way toggle located in the middle of the phone gives the user a one-touch access to certain features of the phone.
The SCH-U520 has all the usual features such as Bluetooth technology, polyphonic ringtones, PC syncing, multimedia messaging, speakerphone and other basic features. The only notable feature with SCH-U520 is its new Celltop application, which provides a variety of features to its users through interactive, changeable windows on the phone’s display. This helps you find the information that you need in your phone without having to go through all the other menus.
Pros
-Attractive new user interface
-Worthy features: Bluetooth, microSD card slot, 1.3 megapixel camera
-Speakerphone feature
Cons
-Unexceptional design
-Uneven call quality
-Cheap looking plastic face
-Confusing buttons on the spine
All in all, Samsung’s SCH-U520 is a unique phone with its Celltop application. Although most of the phone’s feature is not that compelling, the phone still does have some redeeming qualities such as its Bluetooth technology, microSD card slot, Celltop application and its quality speakerphones feature.
