Samsung SCH-U470-Juke Review

Looking at the Samsung SCH-U470 Juke for the first time, you might be reminded of one of the MP3 players that dominated the market before the advent of the iPod. This sets it apart immediately from most of its competition in a pure design sense, which is something few cell phones have been able to do. From the base, MP3 player look, the phone opens up through a swing hinge, like a switchblade, leading to a thin, sleek phone design that any cell owner would be proud of.

After the wonders of the design quality, though, the Samsung SCH-U470 Juke begins to lose much of its appeal. The features included on the phone are rather limited, to say the least. It almost reminds one of a phone that came out five years ago, rather than in the past twelve months. As far as standing with its peers in this department, it can’t. With no V cast support, downloading music for the built in player becomes rather more of a hassle than it should be. The phone offers photos, but no capability for video recording (as shady as much of the cell phone recording features are in the first place).

Using the music player feature is nice, as the Samsung Juke comes with a scroll wheel that makes it different from many other competition phones. The music playlist information is displayed on both the external screen and the internal one, and there was some irritation with the way you have to continually swing the phone upside down and back depending on whether or not you have it open or closed. It was a little strange, but probably wouldn’t take long to get used to.

As far as features go, the SCH-U470 is sadly lacking. It has some standards like a 500 entry phone book with plenty of room for information on each contact, and a Bluetooth support system. Texting, taking pictures, and a notepad are among some of the basic features offered. But beyond that, there isn’t much to speak of. There’s no mobile Internet access, which makes connecting to V Cast an impossibility, which really puts a damper on the music player aspect of the phone. Of course, you can still download through your PC and then sync the playlist. Still, with a name like Juke, you would expect it to lead the way when it comes to music. With 2 GB of storage, it will suit most people’s playlists, but those that want more memory will be out of luck, because there is no expandable feature.

Call quality was above average, and most of our test calls were very clear. This was other than when we used the speakerphone feature, when the calls got a little muddy. This doesn’t particularly cause the phone to rank low, however, simply due to the fact that few phones, cell or otherwise, have a really great speakerphone addition.

Pros

-The Samsung SCH-U470 Juke offers a rather unique and elegant design
-The scroll wheel is functional and accessible
-Has a respectable music player included

Cons

-Not as many features as you might expect from a phone such as this
-No expandable memory
-No capabilities for recording video, and some strange design aberrations

Overall

If you’re looking for a phone people will envy based on looks, this one might be the one for you, but it disappoints when it comes to available features.

A cordless telephone or portable telephone is a telephone with a wireless handset that communicates via radio waves with a base station connected to a fixed telephone line, usually within a limited range of its base station (which has the handset cradle). The base station is on the subscriber premises, and attaches to the telephone network the same way a corded telephone does.
