Pushkar Tourism in Ajmer
The very name of Pushkar means blue lotus flower. Pushkar is a beautiful town in the Ajmer district of Rajasthan. It spreads over 14 kilometre northwest of Ajmer at an average height of 510m(1,670Ft and regarded as one of the great pilgrim centre of the Hindus quoting as ‘the king of the pilgrimage sites’.
Pushkar is located on the shore of Pushkar lake which has myth associated with it.It was said to be created by Lord Brahma and if the legend is to be believed he performed penance here for 60,000 years to have a glimpse of Vishnu.
There have so many temples to see in Pushkar.Some of the temples were destroyed during the Muslim conquests and those were rebuilt later. The most famous one to visit is the Brahma temple.The Pushkar lake has 52 ghats where pilgrims try to take a dip in the sacred waters.
Pushkar is also famous for its annual fair (Pushkar Camel Fair) held in November which attracts a lot of tourists. It’s been said the natural beauty of Pushkar and the sacred lake has become increasingly degraded in the last few decades. The problems arise mainly from the lack of proper-development of tourist facilities and the deforestation of the surrounding area.
Pushkar fair helds for five days and it comes once in a year. These five days are a period of relaxation and merry-making for the villagers. This is the most hectic period for them, as this is one of the largest cattle fairs in the country. Animals, specially a large number of camels are brought from miles away to be traded and sold. Trading is brisk as several thousand heads of cattle exchange hands.
All the camels are cleaned, washed, adorned, some are interestingly shorn to form patterns, and special stalls are set up selling finery and jewellery for the camels. Camels at the Pushkar fair are decorated with great care. They wear jewellery of silver and beads. There are silver bells and bangles around their ankles that jangle when they walk.
An interesting ritual is the piercing of a camel’s nose. It has more than 400 temples including the only one temple in India dedicated to the Hindu God Lord Brahma, the Creator of the Universe.
According to Indian mythology,Pushkar is regarded among the char dham and according to beliefs associated with the char dham myth is that salvation is nt completed until one visits Pushkar.
