Android Application Developments Vs iPhone Application Developments
A recent IDC Survey on mobile application development revealed an interesting trend with Android programmers. The survey brought into light that Android programmers are not as much excited as they were last year. Android’s market size is increasing day-by-day but Android developers appear to be frigid. Developers say that programming for Android has now become a suffering and there are a number of things that deflect developers to go with Google’s Android application development.
However, things are completely different with iPhone developers. While programming for iPhone applications, developers have to work for single hardware configuration but this is not the case with Android powered devices. There are more than 1,443 Android smartphone variants in the market and the manufacturers of these devices use hardware configuration at their convenience. Every developer wishes to work on single OS but this is absolutely not possible with Android. App builders are experiencing difficulties in optimizing an app for 1,443 types of Android powered devices. Here are some reasons that force developers to say ‘no more android app development’.
Fragmentation is distracting developers.
Fragmentation is a big issue for android developers. Google does not manufacture smartphones as Apple. It is a free to use OS, giving scopes to smartphone manufacturers to customize the OS according to the device-specific hardware capabilities and performance. Manufacturers of smartphones customize Android OS to make it adaptable with their devices but they also create fragmentation and ultimately make the course of app building a lot harder for developers. On the other hand, iPhone programming enamors developers while developing the same app for Android OS annoys them. The consistency of iPhone programming offers a clean and wonderful environment for building apps because here, developer’s one piece of code does work on all the iPhones and iPads. This does not happen with Android application development.
Develop apps for leading OS and earn less, why?
According to the latest figures released by comScore, Android now controls over 50 percent of the U.S. smartphone market but yet this OS disappoints developers in terms of the return on investment. It has become a rule of thumb that the price of Android applications should be kept low in comparison of iPhone applications. It is of course not rumor because the gap is clearly visible.
There are apps which have difference price scenarios for iPhone and Android. Developers know that android app do not make as much money as iOS applications. The reason is quite simple: about 86 percent android users more likely to live in the countryside and 80 percent more likely to have only a high school diploma. iPhone users, in this context, are completely different. 67 percent iPhone users are more likely to have household income more than $200,000. There are about 18 percent women in the total user base of iPhone. These figures pressurize android app builders to not to put their apps on Google Play store at high prices.
Your app may have a clone. It’s really shocking!
Life on Android app store is almost lawless. You build unique app for Android users, you release it on Android app store and hope to earn some money. But soon you find that countless developers have also released clone apps with low price and they are dominating the listings as well. How long developers will fight for this issue. There are hundreds of apps for same operations and many of these apps are clones of each other. This issue does not occur when you develop application for iPhone. iPhone has implemented very strict rules & regulations for copycat app developers.
The other planets of apps
If you think Google Play Store is the only place to download android apps then you are wrong. There are other places like Amazon Android Store, LenBarnes, Noble’s Nook Apps, Fasmicro, MiKandi, Lenovo Enterprise App Shop, etc. There are a lot of destinations to download android apps. This is called fragmentation of the market. However, this may help with device fragmentations but it also causes multiple variants, builds, agreements of an app. This kind of fragmentation does not happen with iPhone applications.
The shiny syndrome is infecting a lot of devs!
Windows Phone is an ultimate example of shiny factor. It is rapidly rising smartphone operating system powering Nokia’s Lumia series and HTC Titan 2 series of smartphones. Developers have got fed-up with developing for Android and they are seeking opportunities to move over a new platform like Windows Phone. IDC survey also reveals the rising interests of mobile application developers in Windows Phone. iPhone has always been attracting mobile software developers and now the shiny Windows Phone is also doing the same.
