After Angela Knight’s Resign From British Bankers’ Association, Banks Need A New Defender
Angela Knight has quit her post in British Bankers’ Association. She is known as the public face of the banking industry. She has quit her post after five tumultuous years as the boss of powerful lobbying group ‘the British Bankers’ Association’. She announced her resignation, the day after completion of her fifth anniversary on the post. She is leaving the banking industry in need of someone else who will protect its battered reputation more strongly and efficiently.
She also said that it has been an eventful five years at the helm. She joined the British Bankers’ Association in April 2007, just few months before the collapse of Northern Rock heralded the start of the worst financial crisis in living memory of Britain. She became the lightning rod for the excesses and misbehaviors of banks from the mis-selling of payment protection insurance (PPI) to public fury over eye-watering overdraft charges. Moreover, she spearheaded the attempt of banking industry to block demands to pay out billions of pounds in compensation to customers mis-sold PPI.
Looking into her career graph, she was a Conservative councilor. From 1987 to 1992, she was the chief whip on Sheffield City Council and became MP for Erewash in1992 (on the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire borders), before serving as economic secretary to the Treasury of Britain. Prior to joining the British Bankers’ Association, she represented stock brokers and fund managers as chief executive of the Association of Private Client Investment Managers and Stockbrokers for almost ten years. After joining British Bankers’ Association, she became a familiar face to millions of households when she started to appear regularly on TV to defend bankers’ bonuses as well as the actions taken by her members during the financial crisis period. She also admitted the job had been ‘deeply uncomfortable at times’, but said she had tried to find a balance, and apologized when the banking industry had misbehaved. Marcus Agius, chairman of the British Bankers’ Association and Barclays, yesterday paid tribute to Knight’s ‘extraordinary leadership and energy’.
