God Is Loving and Good and That Is a Predicament For Humanity
Everyone loves to talk about the fact that “God is good” and “God is love” without ever understanding the implications this brings for mankind. This results from a lack of biblical knowledge about the true nature of man, being dead in sin and really evil. Most people, including people who call themselves Christians, like to think of mankind as genetically good with a small bit of evil showing through every now and then. However, the Bible paints a much different picture. Human beings are inherently evil and sinful, and it is for this reason that “God is good” is a fearsome reality.
Genesis 6:5 claims that “The LORD saw how great man’s wickedness on the earth had become, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time.” Being dead in sin it means that there in fact is not any good in man whatsoever. In actuality God claims that we are only evil continually. It is for this reason that evil men should fear God, for Proverbs 11:21 says “Be sure of this: The wicked will not go unpunished, but those who are righteous will go free.” It is because of this that we require the righteousness of Christ Jesus for we have no virtue of ourselves.
People often claim that “God is Love” and therefore he cannot hate. On the contrary, God must hate for the reason that God is love. For if you love what is good, you should hate what is evil. Psalm 5:5 states “The arrogant cannot stand in your presence; you hate all who do wrong.” This is talking of God hating people who do wrong. We can also see by the fact that God will not let the guilty go unpunished that he really does hate evil and sin. A lot claim that “God hates the sin but not the sinner.” However if we look again at Psalm 5:5 it certainly says he hates people who do wrong.
It is because God hates evil and those who do evil that we require Christ Jesus. When left to ourselves, we cannot please God nor do what is good in his eyes. We cannot be worthy of our salvation by doing good works, for Isaiah 64:6 reads “All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind our sins sweep us away.” We have no honorable righteousness of our own, and because of that we require the righteousness of Christ in our place.
It is, for this reason, a bad thing to run around telling people that God loves them even though they go on sinning willfully. People who believe that God loves them no matter what will not have any longing to come to the cross of Jesus Christ. People must be told they have fallen short of the glory of God, and they should fear God since he will not let the evil go unpunished. Only then will people actually appreciate their own helplessness and need for Christ Jesus.
