Samsung M520 Review
The Samsung M520 is a slider style candy bar phone designed with the average consumer in mind. While there are some features here that are above and beyond the scope of the standard average user, the phone is still angled to meet the needs of the masses over the high tech fanatics. That being said, think of the Samsung M520 as a sort of prosumer phone – or a high end “average user” device.
The Samsung M520 is a dual band CDMA phone. This means that it can only be used in America and a few other places in the world. However, on the positive side, taking advantage of the CDMA network means that the Samsung M520 is able to access the high speed 3G EVDO rev.0 network for fast uploading and downloading of files and websites.
Measuring in at approximately four inches by two inches by half an inch, the Samsung M520 is a rather small device. Furthermore, it weighs a measly 78 grams, making the Samsung M520 one of those phones you can slip into your pocket and forget about all day long. Not much of a footprint and not much weight make this phone one of the smallest currently available.
Unfortunately, we can quickly see where Samsung cut corners to get the size and weight down on the Samsung M520. The battery. Expect to get approximately three and a half hours of talk time or a pitiful 157 hours of standby time on a single charge. This is decent enough for the average user, but far below the competition.
The main screen on the Samsung M520 is capable of displaying a relatively low 176 by 220 pixels of resolution. Furthermore, the color depth is 262k colors, again putting it below the average display quality of modern phones.
The Samsung M520 also includes a built in 1.3 megapixel digital camera with video capabilities and a digital zoom feature. Considering its capability, the camera takes fairly good pictures.
Multimedia is pretty well supported on the Samsung M520. The video and audio player provides support for a number of popular formats, but plays back MP3 files the best. Furthermore, the built in 16MB of memory can easily be expanded via microSD cards.
Other features include Bluetooth support, a medium sized phone book, an alarm, a calendar, a timer, a world clock, a to-do list, a notepad, a calculator, a number of voice commands, a voice recorder, a speakerphone, email support, and GPS support.
Pros
-Good feature set for the average user
-Somewhat attractive design
-3G / GPS support
Cons
-Some features not up to par with the competition
-Poor battery life
Overall
The Samsung M520 is a great phone for the average user. But before you rush to the store to pick up your very own Samsung M520, make sure that you check out the competition beforehand. There are tons of other phones in this market sector that run the same price and offer even more features.
