Coccyx Injury and Coccydynia
If you have been feeling tailbone pain in the past couple of days you may be suffering from Coccydynia and knowing everything you can about this condition is highly recommended.
The Anatomy of the Coccyx
Injury to the coccyx can result in a condition that is called coccydynia. Many various tumors are found to include the involvement of the coccyx. Among these, the most usual is called sacroccocygeal teratoma.
Both the coccygeal and coccydynia tumors could necessitate removal of the coccyx through surgery which is called a coccygyectomy.
One coccygyectomy complication is called a coccygeal hernia.
The good news is that mane coccyx pain cases tend to make a favorable response to treatment that is nonsurgical like local injections and medication that is usually done under the guidance of a fluoroscope.
More specifically, coccydynia is a term in medicine that means coccyx pain or pain in the area of the tailbone. Many times, this is brought on by moving into a seated position too suddenly. Other names for coccydynia include coccyaglia, coccyx pain, coccygeal pain or coccygodynia.
In the general area of the coccyx, there are many varying conditions that can cause pain. However, not all include the coccyx and the attached muscles it has. The first diagnostic task is to make a determination whether there is coccyx-related pain.
Bodily examinations, MRI scans, x-rays with high resolutions are able to cancel out many unrelated causes to the coccyx. These include Tarlov cysts and referred pain from the spine’s higher parts.
Usually called the ‘tailbone,’ the coccyx is the last vertebral column segment in primates that are tailless.
Comprised of three to five either fused or separate coccygeal vertebrae beneath the sacrum, these are attached by a fibrocartilaginous joint to the sacrum which allows movement between the coccyx and the sacrum.
In human beings and other primates that are tailless, the coccyx is the vestigial tail remnant but not useless entirely.
It is a significant attachment for various ligaments, tendons and muscles. This makes it a necessity for both patients and physicians to be extra attentive to these attachments when considering coccyx removal through surgery.
In addition, this is also a portion of the structure of the weight-bearing tripod that acts as a sitting person’s support. When someone leans forward, there are other body parts that take the weight but as a person leans back, the coccyx takes more of this weight.
The coccyx’s anterior side serves as an attachment to a muscle group that is essential for many pelvic floor functions including continence and defecation. Attached to the coccyx are also many ligaments.
The clinical features of coccydynia include when direct stress is put on the coccyx when activities that put pressure on the area affected like increased sit-down positions, horseback riding and bicycling. Coccydynia is usually characterized by worsening pain when constipated that becomes relieved with a movement of the bowels. In cases that are rare, intercourse can cause aggravated symptoms as well.
The coccyx term originally comes from the word in Greece that means ‘cuckoo’ which refers to the curved cuckoo beak shape that can be seen from a sideways angle.
