Yelagiri Hills
The Yelagiri Hills are situated in Tamil Nadu. These hills have covered an area around 30 square km having a height of 3500 ft. It is in between 4 mountains, at an altitude of 920 m above sea level. These hills are situated in the Vellore District of Tamil Nadu, near the Vaniyambadi Tirupattur road.
Vellore is the nearest city and Athnavur is the very close town from these hills. Yelagiri is around 19 km from the bantam town of Jolarpettai. These hills also lie in neighborhood to main cities like Bangalore and Chennai.
The area happens to have a moderate climate, which does not get too cool during winters. There are around 14 main villages surrounding these hills, whose people are mainly tribal and are busy in the rural hill people occupations of horticulture, agriculture and forestry. The major agricultural products of the place include honey and jackfruit. Rose gardens, orchards and green valleys surround these hills.
The major town of Yelagiri Hills is Athanur, which consists a twisting road through the hills with sporadic villages and housings on both the sides. Way on the top of the hills Yelagiri goes through this twisting Ghat road. The top of the hills are surrounded with profuse green forests.
These hills have some popular trekking tracks. The highest point at Yelagiri is the Swamimalai Hill, which is about 4330 ft tall. This hill is a famous destination for trekkers with many trekking tracks passing through thick rarified forests. There is also a small small town by name Mangalam on this hill.
Another trekking hills in the location include the smaller peaks of Palamathi Hills and the Javadi Hills. Adventure sports like rock climbing and paragliding are rapidly being pioneered and encouraged in the area.
The Punganur Lake is a man-made lake and one of the famous area of the region. The popular Velvan Temple is located on the top of the hill. There is a large statue of Gadothgajan which is situated at the entrance of this temple. Many festivals are conducted at this temple around the month of July and August, which renders the local culture.
The telescope lookout located near these hills along with the Jalagamparai Waterfalls are some other attractions. At the centre of this place is Athnavur town Domestic Flights , which has also turned into a weekend place for travelers from Chennai and Bangalore.

The closest rail head is Jolarpettai, which is about distance of about 21 km from Yelagiri International Flight , which links to other main railway stations in India.
