Top 10 car models sold in February

The February month has proven to be a month of celebration for carmakers in India as it measured an upward movement of 13.11 percent with sales of 2, 11,402 cars. According to Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) last year in the same month the sales of 1, 86,890 cars was registered. The concern of revision in vehicle costs after the announcement of Union Budget 2012-13 has led the consumer to advance its purchasing in the February month. Whatever may be the grounds for these encouraging numbers the concluded month has observed the highest climb in last 10 months in terms of sales output.

At the moment, success has been majorly tasted by those automakers that have either launched new vehicles or have introduced the face-lifts/upgrades of older vehicles. Hence, ‘Change’ is the only mantra that will prevail in the long run for the automobile manufacturers in India, sighting the auto market scenario at the moment. Let’s take a glimpse at the top ten vehicles that were sold the most in No.2 month of 2012 in comparison to January this year.

Tata Safari

This long living and still determined Tata SUV, which sits at 10th position in the chart, has seen a bit of rise in sales this (February) month compared to the first month of 2012 with 1711 units against 1392 units. May it be because of the jam-packed bookings of Mahindra XUV500 or the delay of New Safari Storme model.

Hyundai Accent

Hyundai Accent, which seems to be a forgotten hero these days, sits at 9th rank with an increase of 25 percent and 580 units in February against 463 units in January 2012. This sedan does well as it has Petrol-CNG fuel option available at a tempting price.

Toyota Corolla

Following the market trend of launching Automatic Transmission (AT) variant Toyota presented an affordable AT version, which is doing remarkably well. The premium sedan marked a hike of 27 percent with sales of 996 Corollas besides 785 in January 2012, bags No.8 place in top ten.

Tata Venture

The compact looking spacious van from Tata Motors was able to pick up a quite good percentage compared to last month, after some decent promotions and publicity stunts along with promising television commercials, which helped it surpass the sales of rival Maruti Eeco. It sold 798 nos. in January 2012 compared to 1102 units in February this year an increase of 38 percent. Tata Venture takes a 7th spot here.

Hyundai Eon

The silent entrant at No.6 spot is small car Hyundai Eon with sales of more than 10,000 units for the first time, since its launch in October last year. On month on month basis it has given a tough competition to arch rival Maruti Alto, as it recorded a slight downfall on year-on-year analysis and still maintaining top spot. An upward movement of 43% was scaled with sales of 10480 Eons in contrary to January sales of 7344 Eons.

Toyota Fortuner

Here again ‘change’ has worked for Toyota as face lifted Fortuner, which was unveiled at Auto Expo 2012, has increased its individual sales by nearly 43 percent with 1346 units (in February) in contrast to January month’s 941 unit sales. The resistance deserves a pat on the back of this 5th ranker, as it still provides tough rivalry to Ford Endeavor and Chevrolet Captiva.

Skoda Rapid

This new sedan, which is at No.4 in the listing, has done a fabulous job for Skoda Auto in India with an augment of 46 percent in contrast to inaugural month this year. As per industry experts, the ‘made for India’ sedan by Czech automaker will see pretty good rise in coming months too. Skoda made sales of 2204 Rapids last month versus 1513 Rapids in the opening month of 2012.

Mahindra Xylo

The first upgrade to Mahindra MUV has done the trick, as sales meter accelerates with a 50% growth in February month and has secured No.3 position in the countdown. The awaited 2012 Xylo has been favorite of the tour operators and equally beloved among private car owners with its new mHawk diesel motor. 2796 units of Xylo were sold in previous month in comparison to 1863 units in January 2012.

Maruti Swift Dzire

This Maruti sedan already had hefty bookings of older model prior to the launch of ‘New’ version. And with 2012 model in place it was bound to scale a new high and it did, with 74 percent swell against January sales. New Maruti Swift Dzire receives a No.2 spot in the standings. There were 15068 Dzires sold against 8637 Dzires in the preliminary month of 2012.

Honda City

The apex spot goes to New Honda City. Since its initial launch a decade back this flagship Honda sedan has constantly been doing excellent work in the entry level premium sedan category in India. Honda presented New City with the toppings of Automatic Transmission (AT) on it along with a new affordable entry level ‘Corporate’ variant and thus creating a hustle-bustle situation at its showrooms. This move towards ‘change’ got a three-fold increase in sales compared January sales of City. Mere 1503 units were sold in January, while there were 6052 unit sales recorded in February 2012.

Out of all the automakers present in India the major chunk of sales goes to the Japanese carmakers that includes Toyota, Nissan and Honda. Moreover, the hatchback segment was again seen prevailing in the country followed by sedan and utility. Both the facts are based on year-on-year study.
