Unemployment Benefits – Benefits Extension Techniques
For all those who are wondering how long unemployment benefits last, the answer is till you get yourself a job again and if you don’t, the period in that case is 26 weeks or six months. The unemployment office has every right to rig you off these benefits if they feel that you are trying to refuse offers that are quite reasonable, or if they believe you are not trying hard enough to get a new job. If that is the case they can, by all means, rig you off your benefits and claims within an instant. But if you fail to get a new job, and your benefits duration is near its end, you can always file for an extension. But you simply cannot just file for an extension if you do not have any idea.
Every state has rules and regulations of its own regarding unemployment benefits for 2012 or dagpenge 2012 in Danish. You need to inquire if your state can extend your benefits claim duration. There are some states that cut back on the duration while some states have this extension program no more. The reason why many states have abolished this program is to get all the unemployed, who aren’t trying hard enough to get a new job, back on track fast. Also, the purpose was to prevent any sort of abuse. Nonetheless, many states have the ‘on-off’ policy. This policy largely varies according to the unemployment status and rate in that particular state.
There is a rule known as the ‘periods of high unemployment’ rule which not all states follow. Call your local unemployment office to ensure if the state is a follower of this particular rule. There are states that are in a particular economic crisis quite often, and go through transitions eras. Such states, if they follow this rule, can allow the period to be extended to 13 more weeks. This helps the worker keep the search going on.
A notification is sent to your once the term is about to end. You need to wait for that notification before you can file in an extension request. The unemployment office sends you a notification verifying whether you want to extend your term of benefits or not. You can never file for an extension unless and until you get this notification. But nevertheless, you need to confirm whether the state you reside in offers an extension period or not to say the least. Do this in advance so as to avoid any sort of trouble or embarrassment in times to come.
For getting an extension, you need to contact the same office from where you actually filed the unemployment claims. There are forms available at the unemployment office which you need to fill out in order to get your period extended. Make sure you have done all the extra paperwork that is required for extension and provide them at the time you file a claim for it.
If in any case your request is denied, you can always file for an appeal to extend your unemployment benefits. For filing an unemployment benefits appeal, you can either do it privately by hiring a lawyer or through the unemployment office.
