CYSTIC FIBROSIS TREATMENT: Purposeful Coughing
Living with cystic fibrosis requires daily lung clearance, so finding the most effective airway clearance technique for cystic fibrosis treatment is critical. One method of treatment for cystic fibrosis is to include purposeful coughing in the routine.
As opposed to reflexive coughing which is shallow and inconsistent, the airway clearance technique coughing for treating cystic fibrosis is deep and controlled. The purpose is to both loosen the mucus and get enough air behind the mucus to push it out – a simple but very productive form of cystic fibrosis therapy.

When using huffing for treating cystic fibrosis, the person blows the air out through the mouth in forceful bursts while blurting out “haw.” This is type of purposeful breathing is also repeated as needed until the airways are cleared.
