Samsung Access-A827 Review

The Samsung Access-A827 is an unusually shaped candy bar style phone. In this author’s opinion, the design is atrocious – but your tastes may vary. In any event, the Samsung Access-A827 is designed with the average user in mind while still incorporating a few features here and there that could only be truly loved by someone who wants all of the bells and whistles packed into their device.

Announced in March of 2008, the Samsung Access-A827 is a quad band GSM phone. This means that it can be used anywhere in the world simply by swapping out the SIM card when you arrive at your destination. Since the Samsung Access-A827 is a newer device, it also supports high speed data transfers over the 3G HSDPA/UMTS network. Unfortunately, this high speed is only supported in the Americas. Downloading files overseas is a much slower experience, thanks to the lack of 3G.

Measuring in at approximately four and a half inches by two and a half inches by half an inch, the Samsung Access-A827 is more like a brick than a sleek, stylish candy bar phone. Despite its rather large size, the Samsung Access-A827 only weighs 98 grams.

Battery life on the Samsung Access-A827 is pretty good compared to most phones in this price range. Expect to get approximately four hour of talk time or an impressive 400 hours of standby time on a single charge.

The front of the Samsung Access-A827 includes a large, 2.3 inch screen. The main screen is capable of displaying 320 by 240 pixels of resolution and a color depth of 262k colors. Not bad, but not exactly up to par with the higher end phones. Fine for this market, however.

The Samsung Access-A827 also includes a 1.3 megapixel digital camera with video recording capabilities.

Multimedia features are supported on the Samsung Access-A827. There is a built in video and audio player, and the stock 100MB of memory can be expanded via microSD cards.

Other features include Bluetooth 2.0 support, a large phone book, an alarm, a calendar, a notepad, a currency converter, a to-do list, a calculator, a voice recorder, a speakerphone, and email support.

Pros

-3G support
-Good battery life
-Wide array of features

Cons

-Multimedia not as well supported as on some other phones in this range
-Not particularly attractive

Overall

The Samsung Access-A827 is a decent Korean candy bar style phone. It has a lot of the same features as other devices in this sector, but falls short overall. Mix this with a design that is completely hit or miss, and the Samsung Access-A827 simply cannot be recommended. Look elsewhere – particularly to devices from Nokia or Sony Ericsson.
