Advancements in Car Wing Mirrors

Car wing mirrors have come a long way since the days of winding down your window to adjust them; continuous innovations in this area have meant they have become more and more powerful as the years have gone on. Unfortunately a by-product of this is that they can cost a fortune to replace if they are broken.

Control Wires
One of the first innovations to come to car Wing Mirror was the introduction of control wires which allowed you to adjust the mirrors from inside the car using little pins on the inside of the door. However, as drivers could not reach the passenger side mirror to adjust them this did not solve the problem completely. Electrics were introduced to allow the driver to adjust both mirrors from the driver’s side control panel. Further developments have been made to tackle the problem for long vehicles as they turn. The issue is that as the cab moves, the mirror can only show the side of the trailer which is of little use. Improvements have been made to automatically adjust the mirror as the steering wheel is turned giving a continuous view behind the vehicle as it turns.

Heated Car Wing Mirrors
As car wing mirrors were already drawing power to be able to power the motors it was a small step to add heating elements to the glass to keep them clear and free of moisture and ice. As well as being an important feature for safety this also saves the driver from having to clear these themselves.

Indicator Lights
Many car wing mirrors also feature indicator lights which helps give other drivers on the road a better idea of the cars intentions to move and make it much more visible, which is always a good thing. I particularly like these as on the odd occasion should I leave my turn signal on by accident I can see this flashing in the mirror.

Heads up Displays
There are currently a number of advancements in development, one of which being the use of a HUD, or heads up display to be projected onto the mirrors. This would use a computer program to make lines more visible and give you a warning of when cars behind are approaching to undertake and when they are at a safe distance to pull over. It is easy to see that car wing mirrors have come a long way and the progress shows no sign of stopping, so keep an eye out for the next big thing.
