Basement waterproofing can protect a home’s value and restore peace-of-mind. Waterproofing basement walls can open up this area of the home for storage, a recreation room or a workshop.

Several options are available for basement waterproofing. Homeowners should call a company that specializes in dry basement solutions to discuss these options.

The Seal Solution

This basement waterproofing technique involves applying hydraulic cement or a waterproof paint to the inside of a basement wall. This will seal cracks and stop moisture that is seeping into the wall.

However, this should not be considered a permanent solution to stop water from getting into a basement. Other forces are at work outside the home. Water that seeps into a basement has already breached the outside wall and is exerting hydraulic pressure on the outside of the building’s foundation. Building owners should consider a more permanent waterproofing basement technique.

The Membrane Solution

This solution involves excavating and removing all the dirt around the foundation of a building. Now a waterproof material is literally applied to the foundation. Then a drainage board is set. Footing drainage is then fit in.

The hole is then back-filled. Now the water will run to the drainage board, down the footing drain and into the storm sewer.

This is not always a permanent solution, and it can cost a good deal of money.

Interior Drain Solution

This waterproofing basement technique is similar to the solution described above. The difference is that the footing drains are set inside the home.

A trench is dug around the base of the basement wall through the floor. A stone bed is now poured in and a perforated pipe is set atop this. Concrete is poured over this. Water then seeps in and is captured by this system and drained into the storm sewer.

This, again, may not be a permanent solution.

The Baseboard Solution

This technique involves drilling holes into the floor, wall joint or block wall. After the holes are drilled, a hollow baseboard is glued into the floor with a special epoxy. The water that’s creating hydraulic pressure from the outside is directed into this drainage baseboard and funneled to a sump pump system. The sump pump directs the water away from the house through a drainage system.

This waterproofing basement solution is less disruptive than other techniques. It also relieves hydraulic pressure from outside the foundation.

Homeowners should call a professional basement waterproofing company to determine the best solution for their home. The basement inspection is free and without obligations.
