Connection of the document scanners to your computer.

Big companies that manufacture document scanners and document feed scanners are very careful in selecting the connection to the computer, because this makes a scanner really fast. Several physical interfaces are known for computer connection and some of them really do their job. A high speed connection means a high speed scanning process. The amount of data that is generated by the scanning process needs to reach the computer very fast.

The most usual connection to computers is the USB which means Universal Serial Bus. This type of connection is very simple to use and everyone who works with computers knows how efficient is the USB port for transferring data from your memory stick to your computer. Recently manufactured USB ports have a speed of transferring that allows document feed scanners to perform the scan in few minutes. Document scanners keep the data in their own memory for a short period of time before transferring to the computer.

Another way to transfer data into your computer can be done using FireWire. This type of connection was quite slow at the beginning, but now the speed is high. Apple was the first computer company that included FireWire for computers in 1999. Since then, technology evolved, offering improved models of Fire Wire. Document feed scanners offer a speed of transferring data through FireWire from 25 megabits per second to 800 megabits per second that makes FireWire one of the best physical interfaces for computers.

SCSI that is known as Small Computer System Interface has not been used for the latest document scanners because it was replaced with USB and FireWire. SCSI makes a slower connection to the computer and it has a big problem that was resolved with USB and FireWire. The SCSI connection is not compatible with all computers, so manufacturers have decided to usually replace this connection with other connections that are compatible with all computers. Some SCSI document scanners come with a dedicated SCSI card for PC.

A known interconnection between computers and industrial instruments is GPIB (General Purpose Interface Bus), very popular because GIPM was formalized in the past by many standards organizations. Connecting document scanners or document feed scanner to your computer using GPIB has been used only by few document scanners that use Windows environment. For Apple computers, using Macintosh software it was manufactured GPIB interface card, provided by National Instruments.

A wide used and economic connection between scanners and computers is the parallel port. The parallel port was widely used because it was an economical solution but it didn’t pass the 70 kilobytes/second speed limit. Today the parallel port is quite slow and it doesn’t provide the high speed data transfer that all document scanners customers want. Scanner manufacturers do not use today this type of connection for quality scanners because they need a high speed data transfer in order to scan multiple pages per minute.

The most commonly used interconnections are definitely the USB and FireWire. Everyone has USB ports today at their personal computers and laptops. With USB you can connect several devices if you have more than one USB ports. FireWire is also accessible and it is compatible with all the computers. This makes from FireWire one of the most popular interconnection between computers and document scanners together with the USB ports.

Document feed scanners are popular because they perform quality scans, faster than other scanners.Document scanners keep the data in their own memory for a short period of time before transferring to the computer.
