Guide to Pheasant Hunting
If you are a connoisseur of upland hunting, you will love pheasant hunting. You know that the pheasant is a very tricky little bird and can hide in the tiniest of bushes. It can crash through the thickest brambles and takes flight at the blink of the eyelid. This makes it one of the most difficult birds to be hunted. Pheasant hunting is a real challenge though following a few tips can make hunting a little easier and very satisfying. The following are certain tips which will help you to outwit this clever little bird.
One of the golden rules of hunting is to study the area landscape thoroughly and observe the habits of your prey and then make the kill. Observe their eating habits, their watering hole and resting places. Meticulously record the time when they are at a particular place. When you are sure that they follow a particular pattern, come with your gun and start hunting. Never hunt at the same location every time. These are clever little birds and they have very sharp brains in their tiny head. Do not follow any rules and make your own rules for a particular situation. A place which has a very difficult terrain and is avoided by most hunters could be the best place to hunt.
There are lot many small tactics which will prove to be very helpful in pheasant hunting. Calling the birds on edges of marshy land, or pushing them into areas they do not want to go is one such method of trapping the elusive prey. You can go through these tips and can change your ordinary hunting trip into a great and successful hunting expedition.
If you have gone hunting at the start of the season, you can find the pheasant sitting in a tight bunch and you and your faithful canine can venture quite close to these birds. The best guns for this part of the year are the 20 or the 28 gauge gun. You can also use a modified shot gun which has a choker and a #6 shot. You can do most of these shots at a very short range. Later in the season the best gun will be the #4 or #5 shot, 12 gauge gun. Use a tighter choke gun during this part of the season. Pheasants abound in heavy grass since they are able to protect themselves better against carnivorous predators.
