Royal Enfield, the Bike and Rolls Royce, the Car With a Long History

India, has since earlier days relied on agriculture and its economy is mostly influenced by it. However, Information Technology has taken over that role in the recent past and India is now identified with it.

India never had much to say as far as Cars and Bikes are concerned till recent times. They were never a part of the populace of India until latter half of the twentieth century. Rolls Royce and Royal Enfield were the two who were present in India even during the latter part of the Nineteenth century.

These were used by the Royals to show their superiority and status in the society. They were invariably a part of the entourage of the royals with various Maharajas possessing it in several numbers. Whenever they were going out, number of Rolls Royce with their wives and others would follow them in a procession. Thus, the Rolls Royce were considered as royal and these were very few with only the privileged few having access to it. The Royals used to travel in them to prove their status.

Compare the scenario with today’s availability of different models and brands of cars in the market. During the earlier days, it was Rolls Royce and Royal Enfield which were synonymous with the Car and the Bike. You can never imagine such a scene was present. But, it is true.

It was the Rolls which were very popular among Royals and some of them possessed even three to four of them. It was a must for the Maharajas to show off their status in the society. The manufacturers, on their part tried to sell their cars catering to the tastes of the individual Maharaja. An example to quote is the Maharaja of Kashmir who was in possession of a gold plated Rolls Royce. Rabindranath Tagore, the noble laureate was in possession of a Rolls Royce which could be seen even now in the Kolkata museum. These cars depict the era of affluence and enjoyment by the few who could afford it.

Royal Enfield, on its part was considered a royal vehicle and put on the same level as Rolls Royce. It was introduced to India during the year 1898 by the UK based company and the models available were Bullet, Hornet and Fury. These models are available even now and stand a testimony to the mark it has made for itself in the view of the customer. The history of Royal Enfield is besotted with lots of problems and some time during mid twentieth century, it came to the verge of being closed down. Thankfully, it has made a recovery. Royal Enfield is available in the Indian market and caters mostly to the government segment. But, moves are afoot to take the Japanese models head on by bringing lot of improvements to it.

Both the Rolls Royce and the Royal Enfield are basically strong and durable and these factors have influenced the decision of the buyers especially those who love vintage vehicles. These vehicles on their part even now are awe inspiring and whoever drives it will be seen as an individual with a taste and identity of his own.
