Difference between the Free running DVD and Parkour DVD
A few months back, someone commented on a YouTube promo I posted for the DVD. It said something to the effect of “You should show the difference between parkour and free running. F&$* am I the only one still practicing the original discipline?”
I’ve come across this sort of mentality before: a strong sense that parkour is one thing and free running another. Blurring the lines between the two offends this sensibility.
To be honest, I’ve never understood the need to draw clear distinctions. If people are outside climbing walls and shifting their paradigm of what’s possible within a landscape, they can call it whatever they want for all I care. But parkour vs. free running matters to a lot of people. And it got me thinking.
Did I make a free running DVD or a parkour DVD?
I thought about it long and hard, and my answer is, of course, an equivocation. And not just one equivocation, TWO EQUIVOCATIONS!
So my answer to the question of whether or not BC-X made a parkour DVD or a free running DVD is:
Both. And: It depends.
I know this is borderline sacrilege, but hear me out.
I realize parkour purists insist that parkour is limited to the most efficient manner of traversing a path. No flash, no pizzazz. Free running, on the other hand, allows for a bit of self-expression, and sacrifices the efficiency for artistic creativity.
But the difference between efficiency and expression has nothing to do with a particular move. It has to do with the context in which it is used.
So whether or not we’ve made a free running DVD or a parkour tutorial DVD is really a matter of context. We’ll teach you how to do a kong. You determine if it’s a free running or parkour kong when you map out your desired end point and decide if that kong is the most efficient way there, or a fun way to get there.
I know some people will still object to calling BC-X a parkour tutorial DVD, but I’m sticking with it. For whatever reason,
Plus if anyone seriously insists, I refer you to my previous argument.
