Solid Hardwood, Engineered Wood or Laminate Flooring?
One of the most frequent questions we are asked here at first floor in Glasgow is which flooring type to go for – solid hardwood, laminate or engineered wood? We feel that there are several key points that you should consider before making your decision.
They key (and most obvious) difference between engineered wood and solid hardwood and laminate is that one is composed of real wood and one isn’t. Laminate flooring offers fantastic value for money, and is great for those on a tight budget. Although it is very durable, it cannot be repaired or refinished when it shows signs of wear. However, because Laminate is made from touch aluminium oxide with a printed surface to make it look like hardwood, extreme signs of wear and tear are rare. The underneath of laminate is high density fibreboard, so it’s perfect for areas that are used frequently. Laminate flooring is also very easy to install, as many of the brands offer a click locking system so they easily slot into place. It is fairly simple for the DIY novice to install the flooring panels if they are confident with cutting and finishing as well as the preparation of the subfloor.
Engineered wood flooring is a less expensive alternative to solid hardwood as less real wood is used in its production. Solid hardwood planks are usually 18mm thick and cut directly from trees, whereas engineered hardwood flooring is made up of several layers of wood attached together using cross-grain lamination. The top layer is the chosen species such as cherry, walnut or oak but the lower levels are made up of a durable, less expensive wood species such as pine. It is cheaper, easier to install, less likely to expand or contract and is environmentally friendly. In addition, once the floor has been fitted, it’s impossible to tell which is engineered and which is solid hardwood.
Finally solid hardwood flooring is still a popular choice. It lasts for generations and like engineered wood it gives any home character. It is durable, can be restored easily and many people feel that the true beauty and durability of solid hardwood flooring is worth paying the extra price for.
