Keeping Wooden Floors Looking Beautiful
It is important that you look after your new solid wood or engineered wood floor to keep it looking beautiful for years to come. There are houses that still feature original wooden floors hundreds of years on, which demonstrates the longevity of wooden flooring and with today’s manufacturing advancements, wooden floors are even more durable. There are several types of finish on wood flooring including lacquered, oiled and unfinished. Depending on your finish, there are ways to keep your floors looking as good as new.
If your wood floor is lacquered it is generally very easy to maintain. Lacquered flooring is very hardwearing as the lacquer is made from polyurethane and all you should need to do to maintain your hardwood floor is vacuum or clean with water. You can also use mild detergents for daily cleaning but here at First Floors we don’t recommend any strong chemicals or excessive moisture.
If you have an oiled finish, again you should only use water or a vacuum cleaner. If it becomes harder to clean as time goes in, you may need to get the surface re oiled. It should be re-oiled twice in the first year and then once per year thereafter.
A word about vacuum cleaners – at First Floors we have had several enquiries about scuffs and marks on wood flooring due to vacuum cleaners that have been dragged along the floor or that have faulty wheels. So please be careful when using your vacuum.
Finally, if you have an unfinished wooden floor then we highly recommend that you don’t leave it that way. Unfinished floors are likely to become marked and stained over time and really do need to be protected.
