Eyeglasses – a true scientific blessing
Science and technology have changed the course of human life. Without the technology, we would still be living in caves and satisfying only our basic human desires. Imagine a life without the internet, electricity and other scientific blessings. It’s absolutely unimaginable, isn’t it? Science has made our lives convenient and easy. One can’t imagine to prosper in today’s world if they don’t have modern utilities and facilities.
There are a few scientific inventions which made more impact than all the others. They set the trend and painted the picture of the world we live in today. Among these inventions are the wheel, engine, electricity, internet and computers. These inventions were the base foundation of all the other inventions and utilities we have today. Often we forget that there are certain inventions which are very important but not given much credit. Rather we tend to take them for granted. We do not consider them important as they have become an integral part of our lives and they look like routine stuff. They are so much glued to our society and lives that even though we can’t live without them, we do not give them much importance. The wonderful invention of Eyeglasses is one of the top examples.
Eyeglasses are like eyes for those who can’t see well with their naked eye. Biologically, the light rays from the lens of the eye don’t fall precisely at the right spot on the retina. The eye is a very complex and marvelous body part. Eyeglasses help the image form on the right spot. With the advancements in the science of Physics, a branch of this science appeared which is known as optical physics. Muslim scientists like “Ibn-ul- Hathem” were some on the pioneers in this field and developed the first lens ever. After the demise of Muslim rule in the world, Europe started to appear as the pinnacle of science and innovation. History bears testimony that the very first form of eyeglasses were designed and crafted in Italy in about 1285-1289. After this, the optical physics didn’t look back and transformed into what we have today.
Today, eyeglasses, eye wear and lenses are incorporated as corrective tools for the eyes. Many people nowadays have various vision problems. To be able to act and work like others with perfect vision, people use corrective eyeglasses. Various types of eyeglasses are used for different vision problems. Common eye problems of today include myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism etc.
Imagine for a moment that the eyeglasses technology was not there, what would life be like? It will be like a bland person’s life. If there were no glasses (as we say in Sweden glasögon), the number of blind population of the world would increase manifold. A blind man’s life is truly a life one doesn’t wish to have. So eyeglasses are truly a blessing in disguise. They not only correct the image but they also serve the purpose of protection from sun and dust in the form of sunglasses (as we say in Sweden solglasögon). Also, they are a popular fashion article as well.
